Floppy question + the mysterious 15 volt rail

Floppy question + the mysterious 15 volt rail

2012-06-10 by Adam

Hello,

Before going into details: is there anyone who know how to set up the Matushita 5 1/4 Floppy drive so it worked all right? Mine loads fine, but refuses to save or format ("Drive Not Ready"). The drive is spanking brand new, so i guess i have to jumper it properly. My system is an EII+ HD.

(no, i am not gonna get the 3.5 inch drive, and i have the Lotharek SD drive stuff, but i need the original floppy because sometimes i receive disks i should be able to read and write!).

I spent some time with the EII mainly because the original PSU drove me crazy. It made an acoustic noise i could not get rid of, so i went ahead to make a custom PSU with modern parts, and seen this and that.

Now the 15 volt rail...Some people were annoyed that the HD versions of EII makes a zipper noise, so you could hear the HD operating in the output of the instrument.

You may know, that the EII PSU consist of an analogue section for the analogue part of the instrument (13.4 volts), as well as a switching PSU for the digital part. (5 Volts and 12 volts)

Many people noticed that the 15 volt pin from the PSU is simply not connected anywhere in the machine! Well, the 13.4 volt analogue rail is used to supply the 12 volt drive motors. Now, i dont think its a good thing, but it is not a problem in a "floppy only" EII. But it IS a problem in the HD versions, because the HD keeps spinning all the time, which will introducte noise to the analogue output. HD users may get significantly better noise ratio by making the connection of the 15 volt switching output directly to the floppy and the HD.
