just got another EII - this one only boots sometimes. Can any one suggest things

Just got an EII yesterday.
1st few times switched on, it got to boot screen, and no further.
So I opened up, reseated a few memory ICs around what I think is first segment (IC13 area?) - used some deoxit and replaced.

Then this time, it booted up and all seemed good. A Bank loaded. I then tried to load a bank from another floppy, started loading, then after a bit froze and blanks screen.

Since then I have removed and reseated just about every IC on the digital board.

Generally all I get is black blocks on the top row of the LCD, nothing on second. And usually ALL of the LEDs lit.
about 1/10 times I might get the boot screen, but no further (doesnt try to read discs).

So in theory most of the machine is OK since I got as far as loading 1 bank.

Wondering if this is a bad connection somewhere.

Maybe RAM/Scanner problem?

Can any suggest anything I can try?
Which Ram ICs should I check first,
Any tips appreciated.
I am very good with electronics, however, not too familiar with EIIs (but learning fast!)

BTW, oddly, my boot up screen is unique(?)

I just tried these EPROMS in my working EII and the EPROMS are OK.

Also, if I switch on this faulty EII without either EII fitted, same symptoms. Ie All LEDs on and black blocks on LCD

Try replacing all of the electrolytics in the PSU.

it seems to be the first thing recommended to try on several posts.
Let us know if that does the trick.

The PSU 'appears' to work, as in it did boot up once, and nearly a couple of times. The 5V rail is all OK.

So is replacing electrolytic caps just a tip for dead PSUs, or do you think it's worth a shot in my case?

these early computer based units are very sensitive to the exact voltages on the PSU.  there's often a sensing procedure at startup and if the voltage is out even my millivolts the computer may not come on line properly. if it's close enough to boot the extra draw caused by engaging the disk drive could pull the PSU out enough to crash the system. the caps decay functionally over time so they may work for several minutes and then not once they warm up...
the whole piece will work better with a happy PSU.

The gurus around this forum say its good practice to replace the caps.
Especially if the original electrolytic caps are indeed what is there now.
This will help to eliminate any possible issues regarding that variable.

My EII had a similar but not exact intermittence while booting im in the middle of the next step of reseating all ICs and cleaning their respective sockets. Hopefully we can both get our EIIs working in a stable fashion.

After that step I will get into the Debug EPROM procedure.
Hope that helps let me know.

Thanks for the tips. I might try re-capping the PSU. But I will try a few other things.

Does anyone know where I can buy a Diagnostic EPROM? Or can some one help me out?
I've burnt EPROMS before, but I no longer have an EPROM blower. It would prob be cheaper just to buy one already done than buy a whole blower (and try and get it working with windows since they are nearly always serial port devices not USB!!)

One other 'pro' I spoke to says it sounds like memory IC problems, so will clean the remaining memory sockets

I ordered mine through Doug Martin at EALnet.
The forum has the file. I am however now uncertain that I got it flashed to the correct IC type device number.
It is said the diag eprom is to be swapped out with the main eprom.

Mine is in the shop as Ive no space or quite the experience in electronics to feel confident performing repairs myself.
Can you tell me what is the IC device number for the main eprom chip?
Trying to verify in case I need to reorder the debug to be flashed on a different IC device type.

Thanks.

I know Doug.

I've bought a Debug EPROM (in a set with Scanner and Main, which I needed anyway for my other EII.

BUT, Just read somewhere that to use it you need a 'hyper terminal plugged into the serial port'.
Damn! something else I need!!

Also, will leave re-capping as a last resort. I'm getting conflicting messages. Some say it's vital and necessary, others, who equally know their stuff say it won't make any difference.

Will try Debug first!!

What is the device type number needed for the Debug eprom IC?
Putty terminal will work on an xp machine with a nine pin serial com port.
Just need a 9 pin to DB-25 adapter. All according to what Ive gathered from the posts.

Damn! something else I need!!

Also, will leave re-capping as a last resort. I'm getting conflicting messages. Some say it's vital and necessary, others, who equally know their stuff say it won't make any difference.

Will try Debug first!!

After scouring through the schematics i found IC42 is a 2764 chip and it is one the schematic 7-12 main cpu ram&rom page 7 of 26 in the schematics doc.

Is IC42 the chip that needs to be changed out for the debug chip?

robert, this is like the blind leading the blind! I'm not sure at the moment which chip slot the Debug goes in, I think it's the left one

The EII service manual gives a lot of details. about the debug, anyhow to use a terminal

All the voltages are the from the PSU, however, 5V rail is at 5.7V

anyone know if this is too high ??

If so, does trimmer R116 on the PSU board change the 5V rail?
Or any ideas what I can try?

thanks

Re: just got another EII - this one only boots sometimes. Can any one suggest things

OK, seems 5.7v isnt too high......

I am both a genius and an idiot,

I found, that after cleaning IC sockets, I put a Zilog back in wrong >:(

Fixed that, and now reliably boots each time.

But no sound :(
So I will run a memory test next

Re: just got another EII - this one only boots sometimes. Can any one suggest things

my main tip:

first of all. revise the PSU or let someone with knowledge do this. You're EII will probable lpay like new.

Second: replace push buttons, they are available...

third If you still have problems, maybe stick in and out memory etc.

fourth : clean your keys.

Fifth : kuddle you're EII

Cheers Zom

If you give up on it or it dies I want to buy the case. I've been dying to get an EII case and mod it with a midi controller, a great server grade PC heart and get Emu-Emulator X sampling system installed. Use the drive bays to hold a small touch screen. And get an old click heavey duty keyboard and paint it to match. Turn it into an Emulator II-Max. All in one sampling DAW that looks old school but can do it all!

I think I can get a micro-AT motherboard and components inside that body. I could also use it to run all my 80's software synths plus the new Emulation II soft-synth, my Arturia Jupiter 8v2 etc. Have all my 80's favs in one board that looks like the classic EII!

Please keep an eye and ear open for E-II cases!!! Thanks and good luck, of course I hope you get your EII up and running well. Nothing beats an original working EII!

The "Emu" (Creative) Emulator X software has got to be the thinnest sounding soft synth ever released. I think you would be doing the case an injustice if you were to do this.  Instead of fat and dark filters it would be icey cold and thin to the 10th degree.

I know a guy who9;s pulled the EII midi controller idea off and I have seen the unit in person.  His faders do not throw midi yet but he's working on it.   He also did a mini Emax 1 that was cut in half and looks pretty cool.  The two main boards float above each other with small risers so they're not touching.
