EMXP error codes

EMXP error codes

2012-03-01 by dupont jean

Hi all,

New around here and already need some help...

I just built a EmuSer.
I tried to send banks from EMXP to my EII and it does not work.
I get the following error message:
Errorcode 1007
....Reasoncode is 3.

I also tried to receive a bank from the EII to EMXP and it did not work either.
But the error message was different:
Errorcode 990
....Reasoncode is 3.

Does someone know what the Errorcodes and Reasoncode mean ?

Thanks
OT

Both errorcodes mean that the communication between PC and EII failed.
The reason code indicates that the maximum number of "init" instructions has been reached (this parameter can be set in the Preferences menu, but by default it's already pretty high so increasing it doesn't make sense)
The "init" instruction is required to start up (or restart) the communication.
So basically it means that the communication can not be set up.

Are you sure the RS422 port works on the EII ? (e.g. does it work with a Mac and SoundDesigner if you happen to own these ?)
If yes, then there's a big chance something is wrong in the EmuSer that you have built. Did you build exactly the same circuit with the same components as in the construction manual ?
Did you check for possible shortcuts or failing components ?
Is the firmware installed correctly ?

I will try to add some more explanatory text in the error messages of EMXP in future versions (step by step...).
You can also ask for support by e-mail instead of using the group message boards.

Hi,

Thank you for the infos.
I know that I should check out my EmuSer and EII but I expected to get
some clue where to look at if I knew the meaning of thoses error codes.
Anyway, I had a look inside the EII (w/ rev.1 board) and I found
something wrong.
According to the EII schematics, IC108 should be 26LS32 and IC132, 26LS31.
In my EII it was the opposite.
I swapped the IC's but it does not work either.
Is there anyone who could confirm what is IC132 and IC108 ?
In advance thank you.

Hi CEM,

The schematics are right. I double check on a motherboard image. So :
IC108 : 26LS32
IC132 : 26LS31

Did you try already your emu II with sound designer for emu ? did it work ?

If so I guess it should work with the emuser too …;

Patiene you’ll get to it, it’s a very cool box !

Thank you for all the answers.
I have no Mac nor Sound Designer to try it out.
I replaced IC108 and IC132 with new CIs but still no luck.
I checked all voltages at the DB25 pins and they seem OK.
I checked my EMuSer and it seems OK.
Also I built another one yesterday and it does not work either.
I will work on it again tomorrow but in the mean time if someone has an
idea it will be much appreciated.

Best,

Re: EMXP error codes

OK, maybe the basic questions now:
- is the Emulator-II in MIDI mode (not OFF)?
- did you also try the communication after setting the Emulator-II manually in "Mac mode" ?
- are you sure you are using the COM port corresponding to the EmuSer (Windows sometimes has a problem resulting in using the same COM port for different devices, including internal virtual com ports) ? What COM port number are you using ?
- are you sure you have installed the USB serial driver for the EmuSer ?
- is the EmuSer "transmit" LED reacting when attempting to set up communication with the Emulator-II ?
- what are the (DC) voltage levels of the E-II DB25 pins (1) when not connected to the EmuSer, (2) when connected to the EmuSer ?

If everything seems still OK, I can send you an (archaic) terminal software for use with the EmuSer which can help us in a more detailed investigation of how the E-II reacts on individual instructions.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EMXP error codes

Thanks for your help.

MIDI mode is on.
Yes I tried with the EII manually set in Mac Mode.
I must say that it is automatically set in Mac Mode when I start a
transfer but then the transfer stops.
Yes, I'm sure to use the right COM port (port 2).
I'm pretty sure I installed the driver for the EMuSer otherwise Windows
would always ask me to install it when I plug it.
The green LED is not reacting at all.

Voltages of the DB25 interface are as follows.
Not connected:
pin2: 1.418V
pin3: 0.181V
pin9: 0V
pin10: 3.66V
pin11: 3.85V

Connected:
pin2: 0.186V
pin3: 0.168V
pin9: 0.179V
pin10: 3.645V
pin11: 3.85V

All the best,
OT

Re: EMXP error codes

2012-03-06 by esynthesist

OK, the fact that Mac mode can be set by EMXP and the EmuSer means that the asynchronous mode works.
The DC voltages seem OK.
Do you have an oscilloscope to check the clock signal on pin 9 ? Is it OK (frequency (500kHz), signal level) ?
What capacitors did you use for C4 and C5 ?
What revision of Emulator II are you using ?
Especially rev 1 emulator-II samplers are sensitive to these capacitors - they have been added to the EmuSer afterwards specifically for rev 1 E-II because without them the same error codes as you have appeared. Rev 0 emulators can work without these capacitors.
Maybe you can experiment with other values for these capacitors or skip these capacitors.
If this doesn't help neither, I will send you the terminal software and contact you via e-mail.

Great !
It works !
Thank you so much for your help.
I replaced C4 and C5 with 220pF and it works great now.
So maybe it's good to mention in the EMuSer construction manual.
Thanks again !

Re: EMXP error codes

2012-03-06 by esynthesist

Good to hear it works now.
Although I have to say that 220 pF is quite high compared to the max. values that still worked on my emulators ;)
To make sure I can mention as accurate information as possible in the construction manual: can you tell me what revision of the E-II you are using (rev 0 board or rev 1 board) ?
Thanks !

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EMXP error codes

Yes it is high but it was the only ceramic capacitors I had around and I
thought it was worth to give it a try.
I guess I was right. ;-)
Thank you again for your help.
Much appreciated.

Best,

I think Esynthesist deserves a big hug from the Emulator community.
He also made a really great installation manual for the HxC virtual floppy drive.

Thank you Esynthesist!!!
