Sd cabel to e2

Sd cabel to e2

2011-10-11 by Wolfgang Krell

Hi there! Question about sd cabel. i was opening my normal mac conection cabel there where only 6 cable but the mini din cabel in the describtion has 8. Is it true that i have to get a new cabel with 8 cable? In the describtion is the pin position rom the din on the left and the e2 on the right side. Should i soldering the cable by numbers? Thanks!;)

Of course... what else would you do ? :-)

No. You can keep the 6-wire cable, bacause the EII only uses 6 wires on its RS422 port. Pin 1 and pin 7 of the miniDIN cable must not be used.
(the document says that pin 1 should be connected to pin 20 of the EII DB25 connector, but this is the clock out pin of the Mac and it is not being used by the EII, so you can ignore it)

Error sd shown this here" i can't communicate with e2 ! Make sure cable is connected and current preset has midi on. " i was checking preset definition 30 midi and turn all midi to#01 and so on. It doesn't really matter whether the DB25 is shown from the front or from the back: the numbering is standardized, so if you turn a connector around, the numbering is mirrored to make sure the same pin is referred to. Usually the left and right pin numbers are printed both on front and backside of a DB connector.

You should use the modem port, select this port in SD for EII, and play with the "local talk" on/off settings in the Mac OS.
Midi must be on (either omni or poly...)
There's a database in this group with a list of compatible mac computers and some hints for using them. The PB5300 is mentioned.
Note however that many many people have problems with non-working RS422 communication when using this particular powerbook 5300.
I have one too and never succeeded to make it work with my EII.

I have a PB5300cs working here. To restate and add to what Esynth has said: Use the Modem Port. AppleTalk must be active and set to Infrared Port (*not* modem-printer port). Zap the PRAM. Only load minimal Mac system extensions at startup. I am of the opinion that Mac OS version (System 7.5.5 here) has something to do with success. Do try your SD communication at least twice in a row if you first see a "cannot communicate" error. You can also try putting the E-II into Mac mode manually. Keep good clear notes of what configurations have been tried during your testing. Good Luck.
