Compatible Apple CD-Rom Drives

Compatible Apple CD-Rom Drives

2011-09-21 by trickstar303

Hi,

Does anyone know what other CD-Rom drives will work with a Mac Powerbook 165 or 180 or Classic? I know that AppleCD 300's work...but was curious if anyone is using a different model successfully..?

Also, anyone know if the AppleCd 300e "Plus" version works? I read they spin with double speed of the standard 300's...are those still compatible?

Thanks in advance.

George

I believe the CD 300e "plus" version is NOT compatible. I have a CD 300e and it's supposed to work, but it certainly hasn't for me...I can't get it to register on my Mac Classic desktop for some reason.

I trust you're using the correct Apple CD rom driver?

I had a 300e in the past and it worked with my mac classic...

Have you actually tried the plus model?

I haven't tried a CD300e, but I've heard it's not compatible. I could be wrong.

What do you mean by correct Apple CD rom driver. I just bought the Mac Classic and I haven't used one since the early 90s. Care to fill me in? I'd love to get the software working...

You will need the apple cd rom driver for the old macs to recognize the drive. Its available on the web if you search. I should have it somewhere. Let me know if u cant find it, i'll be glad to hook u up. Like i said...cd300e worked with my mac classic.

I had bought a Dell USB floppy drive for my PC on Ebay. They can be had for cheap. I think I paid $11 or so.

Then I use a utility program called MacDisk on my PC to create and handle mac-files/disks. The demo version is free and sufficient as it's limit is 1MB or something, basically as much as you can fit onto one floppy anyways.

Here are the links to the driver and macdisk:
