I almost pulled from my 401k to get that or the emax 2. I wonder if there was a licensing agreement for the winner? Those sounds were so much the heart of those songs!

I did take part in the auction and read about all the hardware very carefully.

1) From what I gathered from reading all the info on the recoil website the EII actually didn't have too much of the actual studio banks of DM sounds, only a few banks working and the rest is the same re-sampled stuff as the Emax II and a whole bunch of EII factory disks. It is quite cool though that there are some of their original sounds that were used for teh studio recording.
http://auction.recoil.co.uk/emu-emulator-ii/

2) The Emax II was nice. This one absolutely did have a lot of sound banks from music for the masses and devotion tours. Conspicuously though there are no banks of anything from Violator. They had a list of exactly what is in it on the recoil website... http://auction.recoil.co.uk/20-x-aw-dm-sound-sample-zip-discs/
The (20) zip disks had exactly the same banks that were in the Emax II, they copied them, so you could just buy the zip disk for $900! instead of the the actual synth. Either item you could always resell if you wanted to, not sure the Emax II would recoup investment though. I wonder if someone will start copying and selling the zip disk at $200 a pop or something like that. Obviously, one thing to keep in mind to the purist is that the Emax II banks aren't the actual patches from the studio recordings, just re-sampled versions for the tours, although many were copied from the original multi-track tapes.

Ya, the disks were really what I was after. Too expensive. Would be cool if someone were to resell...
