painting EII cover

painting EII cover

I saw someone on the other board use Tamiya German Grey and it came out pretty good. I'm looking for a more pro job though, even though the one the guy did came out pretty nice. I have been calling around to automotive paint places and they want $200 to $300 to shoot it. It's not out of the question but I am still trying to decide. I may have Bruce Forat in LA shoot it. A heat gun and razor blade is all it takes to pull the paint off. It just peals right off like it's vinyl. Near the round and square holes it gets tedious. My chassis and silk screen is mint so I am not going to touch that one.

There may be a solution for labels soon. I'm still working on this and they were sent off today. They won't be Lexan like the originals, I can tell you that. Although, it is available through Custom Synth in the UK and he said he wants $500 a pair. So if anyone wants to go in on a pair, I don't think $250 is out of the question. But I am working on something cheaper. The cheaper solution will not have the plastic windows like the original so it will kind of end up looking like an SP12 or SP1200 with the open window. I actually do like that with it open. That's just me though.

Since the upper PCB's are out.. it's a good time to do new switches, sliders, pots, LED's, and LCD.

Anyone else out there have any experiences with painting their EII's?

My EII is starting to look like an EIII!

The EII cover has been dropped off at an automotive shop here in Santa Barbara. It's gonna cost $298 out the door, ouch. It should look like new. It better be for that kind of scratch. From the factory it was never shot with a clear or any primer. They just went for it they said. The paint is actually a textured paint and not smooth. I didn't even notice that until they showed me the difference from the box of paint flakes I brought them from the heat gun. I'll post a picture on monday.

EII labels will soon be finished on 3M material. I'm crossing my fingers the second time around. You will not have the clear polycarbonate window though like the factory labe. It will look very SP12'ish without it. Both the main EII label and pitch wheel labels may be available soon. Nothing will be like the original but it will be close. It might even look better than the original label. Cross your fingers for those of you that need a new label. It may be your only option.

There is a new 84x44 Crystal Fontz 16x2 white on blue LCD out. I will order it next week, and try it, and report back. I am restoring a Studio 440 drum machine right now also and all this can be pricey.
So hang tight.
