CDS3 Issue

CDS3 Issue

2011-02-21 by alpoly800

Hello all,
I am able to put a cd into my CDS3 drive and bbot it. I can access the menus and browse around. The Eii says it is under the control of macintosh and the light goes on for special catalogue functions.

When I choose a certain bank the CDS3 moves and then hangs and so does the Eii. I cant get past this part. Ive read that the CDS3 is a tricky customer but if anyone had any tips I would really appreciate it.

Really want to to hear the two cds of sounds I have..

many thanks

Al

Just to be more extact the remote habdheld remote states loading whichever bank press any key to abort but when i press any key it is hung and does nothing.

Can it take a very long time for the transfer?

The CD Drive

The Eii also hangs and I cannot take it off the catalog special functions light.

Im on version Eii 2.3
do you have a standard process (knack) of making it work?

thanks again

The CDS3 drive is not SCSI, it's a small computer with a serial RS422 port that connects to the EII's RS422 port.

Did this CDS3 drive ever work on that particular EII ?
The EII must have the RS422 upgrade on Rev0 cpu boards or the cpu board should be a Rev1. If not, the EII still has RS232 and it can't work with the CDS3 or Mac.

Many things could be wrong...
- The CDS3 drive may have a defect, which could cause it not to be able to read the full CDROM (for browsing through the catagories and banks on the handheld, the drive only has to access the first tracks of the CDROM).
- The RS422 port of either the CDS3 or the EII may be faulty. Since the EII is capable of getting into "Under control of Macintosh" mode, the receiver of the RS422 port in the EII seems to work, well, at least at 31250 MIDI baudrate. But the highspeed 500000 baudrate may not work OR the driver IC may be dead (a common problem).

Do you have a Macintosh with SoundDesigner or a Windows PC with an EmuSer USB/RS422 interface to check if they can "talk" to the EII ? If not, the EII will be the problem. If yes, the CDS3 drive will be dead.

Note: if you have a Mac or Emuser/EMXP setup, you can still use the banks on your cdroms with your EII. Just convert the CDROMs with CDS3TOOL (http://www.emxp.net). This tool will extract all soundbanks from the CDROMs in a format which can be used by SoundDesigner for EII or EMXP.
