Mac Classic won't boot anymore with CD-Drive attached

Mac Classic won't boot anymore with CD-Drive attached

2011-02-02 by trickstar303

Hi,

I have a Mac Classic running SoundDesigner with a CD-Rom drive attached. It used to work perfectly. A couple of months ago I moved my studio and yesterday I finally tried to set it all up again and now the Classic won't boot when the CD-Drive SCSI connector is attached! I get the question mark on the Mac's screen. When I remove the SCSI plug on the Mac it will boot up normally. I tried all SCSI ID settings on the drive and also have a SCSI termination plug plugged into the 2nd SCSI terminal on the drive. I verified the Extensions folder and the CD-driver is still there.

Does anyone know why it's doing that? Am I missing something?

Did you change the SCSI CD drive ID to another number..If it's on the same ID number as your hardrive, there may be a conflict.
Cheers

Mike, thanks for your reply.

I've tried all ID's on the CD drive. Do you know if there is any way to set/change SCSI ID settings on the Mac or are those "firmly" assigned?

I feel your pain.  All that old Mac stuff did my head in.  In a year from now I am sure someone will have well over 1000 voices on a SDCard and I will follow,  I will have turned my old Mac's into a fish tank.  That's all they're good for at this point in my opinion.

Good luck.  I hope you figure out a solution.  Way too fiddly for my tastes to work with.  I envy the guys who pulled this off.  But I'll just wait myself for the HxC.

What do you mean a year from now??
I already got 1000+ voices on a SD card for the SDHxC.. lol..
So nice to leave the huge box of floppies behind.
I'm going to document my instal when it's 100% done to make it easier for others.

That SDHxC looks nice. I just watched Esynthesist's vid on youtube. Does it work well? Where is it available and how much is it? Is it a kit like the emuser?

It would be sweet if someone made a 5.25" bay panel with the LCD and the SD card slot integrated to make it look good...has anyone done that?

I get the question mark on the Mac's screen. When I remove the SCSI plug on the Mac it will boot up normally. I tried all SCSI ID settings on the drive and also have a SCSI termination plug plugged into the 2nd SCSI terminal on the drive. I verified the Extensions folder and the CD-driver is still there.

Mike,

Is there an SD4EII to .hfe software converter available?  And where did you get the EII emuiios.emuiifd image?   So when you say 100% done... you're just saying you're still working on your 5.25" housing and panel like everyone else?

It would be sweet if someone made a 5.25" bay panel with the LCD and the SD card slot integrated to make it look good...has anyone done that?

Yes it works well.
No, it's not a kit.. but you will need to mount it phyically somewhere.
I'm going to use a 5.25" storage draw that I bought off ebay.

Electrically, I've tested it and got it working just fine.. I'm just waiting for the storage draw to arrive and I'll finish the job 100%.
I was not able to get it to save, though others have verified it does work.

More on HxC

2011-02-03 by Mike de Vries

No, I guess it doesn't matter where you got the SD (Sound designer) files from..
I used CKRename to batch change all the file extensions to ".EII" otherwise the conversion program (HxC Floppy Emulator Software)would not convert them to disk images that the HxC would recognise.
ie - CD full of SD fies -> batch convert to ".EII" with CK rename ->;then batch convert to Disk Imageusing HxC software.
I'll write up a step by step guide when I'm all done.
Cheers
Mike

This most certainly points to a SCSI conflict and more specifically improper or failed termination. Double check your cables (including those inside your external SCSI CD enclosure), try another terminator, confirm with another external SCSI drive (Hard Disk, CD-Rom, Zip, Jaz, Syjet, etc). Best IDs to try blind are 4,5,6.

To check SCSI IDs on the Mac end, unplug all external SCSI cables/devices, boot your Mac and install SCSI Probe 3.5 found in this groups Mac file section. SCSI Probe will show you what IDs are already in use by your Mac, so set your external devices to something else.

Thanks for your response Hex.

Yesterday I did some further troubleshooting and it turns out that the Mac won't boot even when the CD-Drive is NOT attached on the other end of the SCSI cable. But when I plugged in my Zip drive SCSI cable it will boot wether zip drive is attached or not. This tells me somehow that my CN50 to DB25 SCSI cable must be somehow messed up?

Would you agree or am I missing something?

Youre on the right track. It could be a bad DB25-CN50 cable, a bad CD terminator plug (have you tried swapping the terminator plug and CN50 cable connections on the back of your CD-Rom?), the internal cables may not be not be seated properly/disconnected inside your external CD case, or your CD-Rom drive itself may have become faulty.

PS: Some SCSI cables are self terminating which could explain why your Zip cable allows boot without the drive attached.

Hex, I tried to switch the term. plug on the cd drive. Didn't make any difference. I ordered a new scsi cable today. HOpefully this will take care of it. If not I'll poke around inside the Cd drive for loose connections etc.

Thanks for your help. :-)

One other thing you can try (if you have the proper cables) is to daisy chain both your drives, putting your self terminating Zip at the end of the chain and removing your CD terminator plug from the equation: MAC-CD-ZIP. If the Mac boots this way, you know your CD terminator plug is bad.

Hex... I'll will try that. Thanks much for your help man.
