A several problems with EII

A several problems with EII

2003-09-04 by grkh2003

Hi everybody!
It's nice to be a member of this forum!
I've just obtained my first Emulator II. It is model 6028 (2
floppies, no HD, not "+" model)
And I have the following 3 problems:

1. The sampling input doesn't pass the incoming signal,
but if I gain it as +40 db using internal amp of EII (Sample module -
gain set)- I can hear the incoming signal very very quiet.
The "Gain" knob makes no difference at all.

2. When I turn my EII on, it tells "Emulator 2 Boot in progress" and
then it freezes! In order to make EII working, I should try to turn
it on and then off for several times - then it successfully asks for
the disk - and seems working ok, except the problem 3:

3. I loaded a presets from the disk, but when I starting to play
them, the sounds became more and more distorted down to the
full silence...

I suspect that the problems 2&3 can be due to the bad internal power
supply. Am I right here or there can me anything else?

It will be great, if someone can help me with it. Any advice will be
kindly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Grigory

RE: [emulatorII-list] A several problems with EII

2003-09-04 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
Welcome aboard!

1. Sounds like the sampling input electronics are in trouble, have a look at
IC62. Check the Sample Gain control is okay and the wiring to the sample
input jack.Replacing the Sample and Volume pots is HIGHLY recommended - it
can really improve the sample and replay sound quality. Use BOURNS or
SPECTROL conductive plastic pots.

2. Could well be a power rail out of spec. The firmwave from the boot ROM
has loaded okay, but the EII is failing to load the OS from diskette. Check
the +5V rail on the digital board, and that +12V is on the floppy drive.

3. Thats bad RAM or a microcontroller problemo. Not good news..

However start by checking the power supply rails are all okay (break out
that DVM), as the PSU is a weak spot in the EII (and EI and EIII and
Emaxs...). Check the power rails are supplying the right voltages onto the
digital and analog boards - as the Molex connector on the PSU PCB is famous
for being useless. It is often removed or soldered up.

Once you are confident that the boards have the right power, you can then
chase down the problems from there. Keep in touch!

Regards
Rob

Re: A several problems with EII

Hi, and thanks a lot, guys! You are great!

***
To Rob Keeble (and all others)
I have a news, regarding my problems. Today I've discovered the
following new facts:

The problem #2:
Let's say it's morning. So, I try to turn on my EII for the first
time - It freezes (the display is showing "boot in process", several
LEDs are shining constantly). I turn it off - then turn it on again -
the same thing. After several turn offs and ons - the same picture,
but the disk drives start to make a noise. After another several turn
offs and ons - EII starts to ask a disc to be inserted - and loads
and works OK (except the problems 1&3). SO! Since this moment, if I
try to turn it off - then turn on again - my EII will be always
booting ok and asking for the disk.
In other words, there is an effect of "warming up" - after many turn
offs and ons - it always starts and boots ok. But if I turn it off
for some more time (say, several hours) - it then starts to freeze
again.
I hope this fact can give you some more understanding of my problem.

The problem #3:
I think it is not the memory, because I found out that after the
sound is became distorted or even if it "came to silence" - it can be
playing normal again after some time. This evening, I managed to play
the presets without the problem #3 during more than 1 hour... I
suppose, this means that the memory is OK. If I right here, then what
could be the reason for this problem?

Can you recommend me something more detailed after this new
information from me? Thank you very much!

***
To Simon:
I live in Moscow, Russia. So, Vienna service is quite far from me :)
Thank you very much, anyway...

***
To Dana:
OK, thank you very much. I'll try to do it tomorrow, when I'm
planning to open up my EII.

Grigory

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: A several problems with EII

2003-09-06 by 3phase

I am not too into it, but when it works,... and later not..then it
seems that the failure is happening after warming up...can be
powersupply...can be broken solderings..maybe the powersupply connector
Rob mentioned?
Or just a massage of the chips to press them all deep in theire sockets
again?

On my E II there is no Molex connector between powersupply and the
circuitboards...somebody soldered the leads direct on..

The powersupply on my machine starts to behave like an old man..i see
the possibility that it will fuck up at one point.
Maybe now , maybe in 5 years. I have it in my urin (as we say in
germany :-) that this powersupply will cause problems one day.
Are there any information about it specs? Maybe its easy to replace
with a modern one..
Or it might be necesarry to recap them in time..

Rob :

Do you know how much power (ampers) the E II Powersupply gives?
Or do you know somebody that may know?
This could be valuable Information for your Emulator Archive.
Anyway thanks for your nice work. Even when there are not too many
users..The E iII is defenetly the kind of instrument that should be
protected during its little timetravel :-)
