Emulator II and HxC SD - recommissioning

Emulator II and HxC SD - recommissioning

2011-01-20 by thispoison

I've recently rejoined the forum after many years in the EII wilderness, prompted by guilt every time I look at my EII and considerable excitement about stumbling across the HxC solution in recent weeks.

My EII fell into disuse after the second floppy drive went from intermittant to dead (an unfortunate path trodden by the first drive a couple of years before).

I also recall crackling in sections within my own samples, so having read as many threads on the forum as I can find, I'm expecting to have to do some work on the RAM and possibly the power supply (at least).

As I have no working floppy drive, no Mac/SD for EII solution and no comms link to PC or Mac, I therefore don't have any way of getting an image and an OS from my floppies onto the SD card to get me going (to even see if the EII has suffered any other deterioration over the years stored in the studio).

I may have misunderstood, but am I right in thinking that once I have my HxC installed (and the software), all I will need to get hold of is an OS image and a single SD for EII soundfile to get going?

I'd then need to wait for the Read/Write support to start building up a library from the EII (or source more SD for EII files)?

Have I made any silly logic leaps here or am actually getting close to a working EII again?

(I assume the OS image could be emailed and could just be dropped onto an SD card and off I go?).

Thanks if anyone can advise.

Cheers

>>> I may have misunderstood, but am I right in thinking that once I have my HxC installed (and the software), all I will need to get hold of is an OS image and a single SD for EII soundfile to get going?

Correct. Some OS images can be found on http://www.emxp.net in the "additional downloads" section; some free EII banks can be found on the internet, e.g. also in SIT compressed format on this group.

>>> I'd then need to wait for the Read/Write support to start building up a library from the EII (or source more SD for EII files)?

If you sample and construct your own presets on the E-II, you indeed will need the Write support towards SD Card to save your bank and build up a library. Within a few days (hours ?) the new firmware and software for the HxC will be released by the HxC2001 team (Jeff...) This version will support Read/Write.
Note that only performance disks are supported, not library disks.

If you have a set of EII floppy disks from the past (e.g. custom created ones), and no floppy drive anymore in the EII to load them and copy them to the SD Card on your EII, the only way to recover these banks is to also buy a KryoFlux USB disk controller and a cheap second hand 5.25 drive. The KryoFlux will allow you to copy the floppy disks on a Windows PC, which then can be copied to the SD Card with the HxC software.

>>> Have I made any silly logic leaps here or am actually getting close to a working EII again?

No you haven't and yes you are :-)

>>>> (I assume the OS image could be emailed and could just be dropped onto an SD card and off I go?).

OS images can be found on the EMXP website. Note that these are OVERLAY files which (currently) require also an .EII (sounddesigner for EII) file before you can copy them to the SD Card.
Note that the OS overlay files themselves (i.e. without any EII bank) will in fact also be recognized by the HxC software as "good EII disk images" and as such the HxC software will not complain when you try to convert them to a file on the EII SD card. These files will even be loaded by the E-II but they will result in an invalid bank and can cause the EII to crash. So for now never convert only OS overlay files to the SD card.
I'll try to find a solution for this problem asap and I will replace the OS overlay files by valid "empty bank" files in the near future.

UPDATE:

Regarding the OS overlay files in my previous post (below): I have replaced them already with new ones which can be converted themselves into HxC HFE files without needing any additional .EII bank.

If you load these "emuiios.emuiifd" OS overlay files in the HxC software and export them as HFE file on an SD card, they will load on the Emulator II as an operating-system only disk containing an empty bank with a NULL PRESET.
This means you can boot and use the Emulator II with the HxC without even needing any .EII file (yet).

i have test the new firmware. Read and write work very well, so nice. But it is difficult to find the good IDE 34 pin cable. I would like to set the floppy drive as the upper drive ( to copy all my library on the hxc ) but I don't know how to set the jumber on the floppy drive cause of the "twisted" cable...

Re: Emulator II and HxC SD - recommissioning

2011-01-30 by esynthesist

Assuming that your upper drive is Drive 1 and the lower one is Drive 2:
- Drive 1 = floppy drive --> use the "untwisted connector" of the twisted cable.
- Drive 2 = SD HxC --> use the "twisted connector" of the twisted cable.
- Set the J3 jumper of the HxC to "ID2/DriveA" (see manual of HxC)
- Don't change any jumper on the floppy drive, but make sure you use the floppy drive which was on Drive 1 originally.

If the orginal Drive 1 floppy drive is broken, and you want to use the other one now as Drive 1, you'll have to change a jumper on the drive, unless you use the HxC as Drive 1 and the floppy drive as Drive 2. In the latter case the configuration will be:
- Drive 1 = SD HxC --> use the "twisted connector" of the twisted cable.
- Drive 2 = floppy drive --> use the "untwisted connector" of the twisted cable.
- Set the J3 jumper of the HxC to "ID3/DriveA" (see manual of HxC)
In this configuration it it still possible to copy banks from floppy to HxC, but not using the "Copy Disk" function. You'll have to load the bank and do a "Save Bank" to "Disk 1"

Note: I didn't test the above configurations, I just derive them from the documentation I have...

Hi All, did you make a test on Rev C of floppy emu? I have Rev B and didn't perform the FW update yet.
Does it mean that for write it uses SRAM add-on?
thanks!

For write support the SD HxC Rev C should be used.
But on the HxC forum there's a description of how to apply the hardware change to the Rev B boards.

Are you sure that i can choose the floppy drive destination for saving banks? I thougt that i just can save bank from the floppy witch i loaded sample. ? Maybe a difference between O.S version? I have to check.

In v3.1 I'm sure. The EII asks "Drive 1 or 2 ?" on its display...

I tried following these instructions this weekend, and I think the above may be incorrect. When I look at the HxC manual, it appears to indicate that if you install the HxC in Drive 2, you need to set the J3 jumper to ID2/Drive B, not ID2/Drive A. Please verify.

Re: Emulator II and HxC SD - recommissioning

Did the ID2/Drive A setting NOT work in your setup with the HxC on Drive 2 ?

Because as far as I remember, with all tests I have been doing for Jeff on my EII it really didn't matter if I selected Drive A or Drive B on the J3 jumper array. The only consequence of this choice seemed to be that I had of course to select the same "drive" on the SD HxC after booting the SD HxC (i.e. when the firmware asks on its display which drive to use, A or B, one should select the drive that was chosen on the J3 jumper, A or B)

The ID0->3 choice (either on Drive A or B) is more important because it tells the HxC which 'drive select' line on the Shugart 34 pin interface should be used for activating the HxC. This is a choice on the actual physical/electrical level.

But I can do the test again during the weekend - for sure I don't want to give wrong information here :-)

Anyway: ID2/Drive B will work (too) !

I'll try again this weekend to confirm. To be honest, I'm having trouble figuring out what software to put on the SD card from my computer. It appears that I have to run the HxC floppy emulator software and export a file to my SD card, but I'm not sure the settings. And I'm not sure how or if I'm supposed to create foldres on my computer, or after I get it into the HxC. Perhaps that's my issue, I don't have the right software on my card. I spent a good couple days trying to figure it out.

Still no luck with this. A forum member sent me two files to put on my SD card, but I couldn't get my EII to load it. Any ideas?

Re: Emulator II and HxC SD - recommissioning

2011-03-22 by esynthesist

Can you tell what exactly is going wrong and what steps you have taken so far (step by step) ?
What files are on the SD Card ?
What firmware is running on the SD HxC ? (you need the latest version)
What buttons are you pushing on the SD HxC to select the .hfe file so that the EII can load this "disk" ?
What's the display saying ?
What LEDs are ON/OFF/flashing on the SD HxC
What files did you receive from the forum member ? HFE files or other ones ?
...

By the way, I just received confirmation from the HxC guys that the choice between Drive A and Drive B is not important if you use the HxC as a "single drive" emulator. So both A and B should work, independent of whether you connect the HxC to the DS0 or DS1 line of the EII. However during tests I did yesterday, the SD HxC is not recognized by my EII if I configure it as Drive B. I don't know why, but I have to set it to Drive A, no matter if I use the HxC as the first or as the second drive on my EII...

The only consequence of this choice seemed to be that I had of course to select the same "drive" on the SD HxC after booting the SD HxC (i.e. when the firmware asks on its display which drive to use, A or B, one should select the drive that was chosen on the J3 jumper, A or B)

I'll try again this weekend and walk through step by step.

Thanks!
