EII LCD Display

EII LCD Display

2010-10-17 by jmp701

Just done a search and can't find the info, so...

Anyone know of an available replacement LCD for the EII? Closest I've found to the original Optrex DMC-16207N-EB have slighlty different outline sizes and viewing areas (by mm) and not sure if these could be used?

If anyone has been able to replace one successfully, would appreciate details of what LCD module they used. Cheers.

Do you need the entire circuit or only the backlight ?

Thanks for the responses but they're out of stock at EPR:

http://www.eprelectronics.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=49

I've already replaced the backlight and was looking to replace just the LCD module (screen and PCB attached) as the characters are fading.

I've now found some exact size (PCB and viewing area) new LCD modules, one supplied with a backlight, the others without. 16/2 lines and 5V voltage is the same but wouldn't know otherwise if compatible.... Does anyone know if LCD's supplied without backlights can be fitted with them (i.e. with the one I have currently) or do they generally not have the facility to insert a backlight if not originally supplied with one?

The two I'm looking at are Trident Trimods1538STNLEDTFV (with backlight) or maybe AZ Displays ACM1602A Series (think this one is Sharp manufactured) without backlight.

Cheers.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

Send the EPR pictures to the Crystal Fontz and maybe they can match it up with one of theirs.  I did that with my Emu Command Station and the LCD came out beautiful (blue back-lit with white letters, verses stock green).   A massive improvement over stock.  You may want to touch base with Forat also.   He has my SP1200 and he's fitting it with one of his blue LCD's in the 1200 now.  He did my last one, and it's a huge improvement over the 20+ years old LCD's.  And I think the the EII and 1200's lcd's are similar.   Or you can throw in a $30 foil from Telesis, but I wouldn't expect too much there.

Thanks James, I've just tried a search at Crystal Fontz and there was no exact match but will email them the details.

According to the EPR site, the EII display is the same as the SP12 and original grey cased SP1200, is that what you have? I've heard the 'Forat' name bounced about a few times now, where or how is he contactable?

Thanks for your help.

Bruce Forat used to build drum machines in the 80's and is responsible for the F9000 and F16 and a ton of other stuff.  He now mostly mods machines or repairs them and custom paint jobs.   I helped him do sysex dumps on his Prophet 10 till 5 in the morning a few weeks ago and then had to drive home 2.5 hours. Not your average friday night!

Let us know how it goes.  I want to replace one of my EII's display too.  There is room for improvement there I think.

While I have never met Bruce Forat in person, he was extremely cordial and knowledgeable when I sent him my LinnDrum for repair. His services are not cheap, though (he's among the most expensive techs I've dealt with over the years), so you may want to keep that in mind if you end up purchasing anything from him.

Re: EII LCD Display

Thanks for the replies.

Right I've emailed all those suggested and will see what comes back. If no joy there, will approach a tech over here in UK about the right sized ones I've found over here to check compatibility (if possible).

Will update to advise how it goes, if anyone has done the replacement in the meantime, would appreciate knowing what LCD was used.

Cheers.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-18 by James Ulibarri

Forat charges $175 for the SP1200 LCD swap which includes the part and labor.  Now what he does in the inside is anyone's guess. I'm assuming tweaks to the
inverter and maybe some resistor swaps to get the angle just right.   I figure it will be your most utilized part used on the machine so a good display is a must.
A non-scratched and clean LCD section on the label helps too on the EII.

Also try www.backlight4you.com and Stefan could help you.  They have colors too other than green.  Glow Hut has colors also.  I think the Telesis units just
use a gel which is hard to see when you have black/gray letters trying to come through.

Noritake's vacuum fluorescent LCD would be interesting too.   I think you would be paving new ground here if you pull this off!

Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-18 by jmp701

Well, Crystalfontz have replied quickly and are suggesting this:

http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAH1602A-YYH-JT

Outline dimensions match, viewing area very similar and with backlight. Same 5V voltage supply. $20 approx. ($50 ! with postage to UK). I need to confirm compatibility (?) as know little on electronics. Got a couple of contacts, will see what comes back.

OK, response from Bruce Forat:

'The ones that we use have LED backlight (Blue/ White text) same as what you see offered for the SP1200 on our site at www.forat.com/service however they are not direct replacements and require mods. There's someone selling the original SP1200 displays on eBay and I think it should work on the EII as well':

$104 is steep but attempting to clarify the make/model of these with the seller. Also found someone in UK that appears to have replaced theirs and will update if/when further details come back.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-21 by Damir Rogina

I just decided and order few Displays of ebay!!!!

i realized that all old displays are using same Type of Processor HD44780

EII
EMAX
SP12
Prophet VS
Studio 440

all using 16x2 LCDs
they are compatible with new ones BUT
be carefull some devices like emax have no space for 12 mm of new LCD displays!!!

old displays are 8mm (lcd 5,1mm+ pcb 3 mm)
some new displays are  12mm (display 5,1mm + LED area 4mm + PC 3mm)

big improvement with new displays is :

LED backlight or VFD displays from noritake
no need for hi voltage and inverters that produce hi pitched noise
all displays are pin to pin compatible... just get instructions, get soldering iron and some wire!!

this is pin out of all Displays!!

Pin1 : GDN -
Pin2 : VCC +
Pin3 : Contrast for Display - Using 10k resistor mostly
Pin4 : RS (Register )- For high power to select the Data Register , low power to select Instruction Register .

Pin 5 : RW(Read and Write ) - high power for Read , low power for Write .
If RS and RW are low power , it will read a data to show on the screen address.
If RS is low and RW is high, it will read a data and busy signal.
If RS is High and RW is Low, It can write a data

Pin 6 : E (active port) , from High to low will action a Instruction;
Pin 7~14 : D0 ~ D7 are data port .
  ( Standard port :
 For Microchip : RB0 ~ RB7 = D0 ~ D7
 For 89S51 MCU : P1.0 ~ P1.7 = D0 ~ D7
 For AVR  :  PA0 ~ PA7 = D0 ~ D7 )

Pin 15~16 : Backlight + and - (AK)
The LCD is includes a 160 words in CGROM which are number , symbols ,English words and Japanese.

JUST ordered this one to try!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250709598196#ht_2412wt_1141

will let you know 5GBP is not to omuch cash ...why not try in EMU!!!

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-21 by James Ulibarri

That guy on Ebay jacked up his price from $22 to $69. I've watched that auction.    I still think your Crystal Fontz idea was the best.  That definately looked like it was gonna fit.  I like the blue version of the one Crystal Fonts LCD.

http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAG14432CTMITT.html

$30 instead of the green for $22

But that $5 one on Ebay looks good too.   I purchased one of these smaller blue $5 units from China too and have not installed it in my Yamaha TX-7 module or had it done.  But I have seen the $5 in person and it was perfectly fine.  No complaints.  Expect a month delivery though.  (seriously)

I have a spare EII that I cannot get to work right now after the PSU was re-capped and every IC reseated.  So I could try having some of these installed in that unit before messing anything up in my EII+ that runs like a top.

So the EII doesn't have a backlight lead on it from factory?  One of my techs did my Command Station and he tapped into something or reversed a ribbon wire and it fired right up with contrast control and everything.  So I think all this is purely experimental.   You just gotta try it until one of us figures out the exact unit that will work.

Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-21 by jmp701

That $5 Ebay one is the wrong size, PCB outline and viewing area:

Original is 84 X 44 X 11 mm outline, 61 X 15.80 mm viewing area.

I've just been told somewhere else also that the old LCD's were Hitachi HM44780 but replacing with a modern Powertip one of the same size was NOT straightforward but worked eventually with some knowledgeable tinkering and modding.

Think this is a project too complex for me, short of maybe buying the $104 original SP1200 one, although still not sure if exactly same model as the EII for a straight swap. Seller cannot confirm....

Anyway, good luck with yours James, let us know if you discover an easy swap solution in your spare EII ;)

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-21 by James Ulibarri

Just got off the phone with Tim at Crystal Fontz.    The green is in stock.

http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAH1602A-YYH-JT

Now it seems like it will fit per John's correspondence with them, but the issue at hand is the voltage to the back light.
Tim wants me to have it fit, and basically find out if the back light blows up due to a lack of a resistor on board.

Now regarding the blue, part number # CFA1602A-TMI-JT , if someone wants that (me !), would have to be built by their factory in China.
And they said they could integrate a custom resistor on board of the LCD for our EII's, to avoid the EII are blowing the back light out.

I don't feel that my tech would even chance sending all 5 volts to it anyways.  He's kinda resistor happy and he wouldn't send a full 5volts to the unit anyways.
He tends to like to drop down everything by 1.5 volts and then start there.   There is an 8 week lead time for the blue units if someone wants those.
I sure do.  Two months will fly by like nothing so I am not put off about that.  But we have to order 10 minimum.  They of course won't just make a one off blue unit.
I don't mind springing for them if the green one fits.  I have one on the way and I'll let you guys know if it fits and how it looks.

The green is gonna look funny, but this is just an experiment.

Hey James,
Please keep us posted. If you and Tim get this worked out to the point that its a drop-in replacement, we could organize a group buy. If the cost for ten units is as stated at Crystal Fontz, Id be in for two.

Ok.  I am picking up my EII today from the tech downtown.   Unfortunately no success on this unit after the PSU being recapped and every IC
reseated and Molex connectors sprayed with Deoxit.   Still not booting fully.   But the Crystal Fontz LCD will be here mid week from Seattle and the EII labels
are almost done too.  I'm keeping that on the DL till I see the first prototype this week.  I'm just using this EII as "test unit" for now on the LCD and label.
On a positive note, I am getting my LeCover vinyl cover for my EII+ signed by Alan Wilder tomorrow!   He's gonna be in town for the Recoil performance.
I'm stoked.  Maybe I can ask him if he still uses his EII still.

I saw Alan last night in SF, the show was awesome! I heard Martin is going to be at the LA show so that's gonna probably be even better. Wish I could make it. Funny only piece of old gear I saw last night was a MS-20. Guess the days of live EIIs are long gone....a MacBook Pro is much more reliable for live:) although I did notice the IT Guy having to restart systems a few times during the show, looks like they where running off batteries somone forgot to plug in the old power adapters!

I know the Santa Ana show is sold out.  Martin is supposed to DJ after hours.  Hopefully it's better than Andy Fletcher's DJ sets!

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

2010-10-24 by James Ulibarri

Alan Wilder yesterday said that he has every Emulator ever made and non of them work.  I had him sign my Little 15 - 7" and my LeCover dust cover my EII+, but my cover is grayand the Sharpie he used was in silver, so it's there but not like a black marker would have looked. I was way too nervous to correct him or have him do it over.  Anxiety got the best of me and like an idiot.. I actually had the shakes handing my stuff to him.  I get like really bad during public speaking, etc.  Ugggghhh, not my best moment at all.  But he seemed really shocked that someone out there had one that still worked.  He was like "really??, and it still works??".   I told him that it was probably his power supply and he said "oh that's ok because I probably would never use it." and just smiled.

Not your average saturday.  Although, part of me wishes he still uses his EII.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EII LCD Display

2010-11-05 by James Ulibarri

update regarding the Crystal Fontz LCD in the EII from my tech...

"Mixed results tonight. I have the new LCD physically in. It required 0.125" standoffs and new bolts, but otherwise it fit fine. I added a new cable and connectors and contrast pot. It comes up OK, but it starts to get gibberish after a few seconds. I've seen this before. Normally as a result of new LCDs being susceptible to noise that the old ones would ignore. I haven't got the back light going yet.  I won't be able to play with it again until the weekend."

Forat told me about the gibberish thing today on the phone. He said he ran into the same problem with the SP1200 when trying to track down the right LCD for his signature mod.  My tech on the EII project is not Bruce by the way.  There is only one Bruce,  and having more than one machine done at a time saves me time, but not very kind on the wallet.  I talked Bruce into doing a different LCD in this 1200 this time.  It's gonna be sick.  White letters on the black LCD.  I hope it works.  With Bruce you're paying for all the jumping that he has to do, and he definately knows his shit.  But things aren't looking good for the EII right now.   I'm glad I didn't try it on the EII+.

We will see what happens. I'm curious if Roginator's $5 Ebay units will work in the EII.
Wouldn't that be nice.   Any luck, Roger?
