USB floppy emulator for the EII.

USB floppy emulator for the EII.

2010-10-02 by Gino

Has anyone attempted to make a hacked version of something like this that would work in an EII? I know the drive specs are different and the USB drive would have to be formatted in some special manner to support EII banks. I've haven't been up to date with things lately so if this has already been done, I apologize in advance. If not what would be required?

That looks awesome ! I'd really to know about this too...
Also, where can a 3.5" drive be found for the E-II and how much does it cost ? do you recommend it ?

Re: USB floppy emulator for the EII.

By coincidence I just got an e-mail telling me that the guys behind the HxC emulator are currently trying to determine the EII disk format specifications (via reverse engineering).
These specs are fundamental for modifying any hardware device to make it able to replace the current EII floppy unit(s).

So if we are lucky, the EII will be supported by the HxC SD Card emulator soon !

The floppy replacement kit of the HxC is using SD cards instead of USB flash ram devices.
But it's great and it uses the very same principle: the SD card would contain tons of EII floppy images (e.g. saved to them on a PC or Mac) and with 3 buttons and a small display, you can select the "floppy disk" on the SD card that you want to "load" and then press the Disk 1/2 button on the EII to actually load the disk. Load time would be the same as the floppy disk load time (25 seconds).
I hope the HxC team will succeed in their reverse engineering process.

I also hope that they will even be able to allow the EII to *write* to the SD card; because as far as I understand reading seems easier to implement than writing...

If this HxC will work on the EII - as it does already on the DPX1 - I will of course also modify EMXP to support full EII disk images (including OS) instead of "just" the soundbank part of the disk image (the current .EII files).

I think they will succeed.

Here's the latest quote from Jeff, the guy behind the HxC (see HxC forum):

"EII support is on the way. The encoding scheme used by the EII is FM.
Almost all the track format is now know thanks to the KryoFlux team Wink (sync, sector id , data ,crc...)"

KryoFlux reverse engineered the disk format by disassembling and investigating the Debug ROM of the EII (which contains code to format, read and write EII disk tracks). A member of this Yahoo group and eiiiforum triggered the HxC team to start up this EII work (thanks wintermute!).

After the HxC team has succeeded in upgrading their device for the EII, I also hope someone will succeed in adapting the device in a way that it fits nicely in a 5.25 replacement bay, with the LCD display and buttons on the front panel. A bit like the custom built one in the DPX shown on youtube:

I will definitely take care about the enclosure as soon as everything is ready and we did some testing :)

I am pleased to announce that the first EII disk has been dumped successfully by the KryoFlux team! Finally EII can be brought back to this millenium!

Re: USB floppy emulator for the EII.

Fantastic !

And the dump is perfect: the OS and the sound bank are nicely sitting together on - wintermute just sent me this first revolutionary file for analysis and it was a piece of cake to extract the SDforEII file from it and load it via RS422 into my EII for test purposes.

This is really great.

Who would have expected this only a year ago :-) ?
Our Emulators fully loaded with bootable OS and hundreds of banks on the SD "EII hard drive", and connectable to a Windows PC with USB.

The EII beast is more than ever alive and kicking !

I'm wondering now how you will be able to "adapt" the board so that it fits nicely in a user friendly way in a 5.25 bay.

This is fabulous !!!! A huge thanks to HxC guys for taking this project a step forward, this is a huge contribution to the world of music. The EII are ones of the best sounding samplers ever !!!

Absolutely brilliant work guys!

How fast will it load a bank? Any chance of
beating the 4-second HD load time?

Absolutely amazing.
This is SOOO amazing.
Too amazing to be true.

So when (and WHERE)can we buy this thing??
I still think I'm dreaming.

Just little question... work for read only or read and write ????

The DPX-1 is sound reader... But with Emulator (how write sound file I
just sampled) ???
