Messed up EII power supply, and worse

Messed up EII power supply, and worse

2010-09-17 by jimstew37

Hi, all:

I recently got a broken EII that I've been attempting to repair. Originally, on power-up, the drive LEDs would come on, along with some random panel LEDs, but the drives otherwise didn't work. The LCD backlight also comes on, but no display. The power supply had the typical burned yellow wire, so I fixed that, and resoldered the 8 pin connector to the PCB.

The "worse" part in my subject line is that I accidentally plugged the 8 pin cable so that only 7 pins were connected! I didn't see this until after I'd powered on. Although the LCD display read:

***Emulator 2***
Boot in Progress

I smelled something burning, saw the messed up connector, so I cut the power. Now, the drive LEDs don't come on at all, but a few panel LEDs are on, and the backlight as well.

After you're done laughing at how someone could do something as goofy as I did, maybe someone can give me an idea of how much more damage I've done to this? And what I can do to fix this?

By the way, I checked the voltages from the PSU lines to the PCBs and they are seem to be a bit low.

Cheers, Jim

Hi,

I posted a response but it didn't show up - anyway, I correct myself just in case it appears. You will need to look for shorts first, first in the powersupply unit (most likely it will be there), then if you haven't found anything, in the rest of the circuit. Look for burnt out parts, especially tantlum caps.

Thanks for your response. I'll look into those. There was nothing obviously burnt, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I've got a service manual coming, so that should be a big help. I'll probably end up replacing most of the components on the power supply, especially the caps, but I want to take a more systematic approach rather than replace everything right away and not know what went bad.

Cheers,

Jim
