New version of EMXP with RS422 support

The RS422 support has been released in the newest version of EMXP today.
You can download this version (for free of course) on http://www.emxp.net

As announced a while ago, this version allows serial communication between EMXP on Windows XP (or higher) and the Emax-I or Emulator II.
Sound banks can now be uploaded and downloaded without having to use a vintage Mac computer anymore...

...you will need a custom built USB-RS422 adapter though :)
Details how to build this adapter yourself can be found on http://www.emxp.net also. The thing is called EMUCOMBOX - OK, I admit this name is the result of a weak moment of low creativity.

Anyway, I'd like to give credits to and thank MrJulian (fellow member on the Yahoo Emax Group) a lot for making this possible by sending me a jumpstart prototype last year. A new world went open for Emu Emax/EII fans.

Note: in the future a smaller and easier-to-build version of the adapter may be released, based on another microprocessor board.

E-Synthesist, this is great news! To think of the time I spent trying to get my SE/30 back on its feet after the logic board died last year...

Now here's a question I'd like to pose to the group: I'm sure that some of us (myself included) do not have sufficient soldering skills to build this unit. Is there a group member who would be interested in building a handful of these for a small fee? In my case, I've already acquired most of the parts, but am simply not comfortable soldering either the Amtel board or the DB25/DB9 terminals.

thanks very much !!  this is great work, I've just had a quick look at the PDF for the emucombox, looks like fun.  Now I need to go
call my local Atmel rep ... ;-)

i realise how great it is, and it's too bad because i can't find a AT90USBKEY 1287. as some others asked, could i buy from you a working emucombox ?

This was indeed bad news a few months ago... once Julian and I got the EmuComBox finally up and running, the main component was suddenly out of stock and put in backorder everywhere.
Atmel had put the production on hold, and it's unclear if and when production will start up again.

Some other AVR boards can be used too though, although the firmware must slightly be adapted and of course recompiled.

The next-generation EmuComBox, called E-MuSer, is not using the AT90USBKEY anymore; it uses the Teensy board from pjrc.
The Teensy board of the E-MuSer uses an ATMEGA32U4 processor which is not so powerful as the AT90USB1287, but it's fine for the E-Mu high speed RS422 communication requirement. The AT90USB1286 will do the job too, as well as some others (probably the 162 too).

I almost got a heart attack when I heard from PJRC, just after having successfully built the E-MuSer, that their Teensy boards (all variants) were out of stock and that they were having trouble to build new ones due to... production problems at Atmel.

Fortunately PJRC succeeded in getting their hands on another batch of ATMEGAs, so the Teensy can be ordered again. See www.pjrc.com
I will receive a few of them one of the next days; I will also build a few E-MuSers in the coming weeks/months when I have spare time :-)

I still have to write the full "howto build an E-MuSer" document and publish it on the emxp website. This document will be much more detailed than the current EmuComBox document. 
It will contain many photographs of the device from PCB till final product, a step by step explanation of how to build the device and a layout for a compact printboard (not pcb...) (6cm by 6cm) which can hold the full E-MuSer circuitry. 
...this document will be written when I have time left :-)

Thank you !  i can't wait ! ; )  i should perhaps buy one of these teensy, but there's two choices : 

Teensy, $18 
Teensy With Pins, $21 
USB Cable, $4 

and different versions of the teensy :  http://www.pjrc.com/teensy/index.html

i should probably wait until you've finished the manual. but if i order the right parts now, i could be ready to build it when you'll communicate the e-muser build instructions. 
if you 're sure of wich parts i should buy allready, please tell me if you have some time for this, ad i'll order it. or if you have a price for a finished e-muser , by yourself ( so it'd be sure that it would work fine also ) , please tell me.

here is the answer of deanna wild, at atmel, she tracked some infos for me about the at90usbkey. i've answered with your reply, into my mail, so she'll know too that atmel almost gave you a heart attack ! ; ) 

"Atmel has made a change to the above mentioned part number. It is the exact same product, but it is now AT90USBKEY2. We do not have stock and LT for this is 52 weeks."

They must be kidding...

Anyway, the E-Muser uses the $18 Teensy 2.0 board without pins BUT you'll have to solder 5 of those pins yourself then (because only 5 pins are used).
You could order the version with pins to avoid the soldering, but in that case a small change will be required on the printboard to avoid shortcuts (a very small change, don't worry - I might indicate it even in the instructions...)

Compared with the EmuComBox, some additional electronic components are used in the E-MuSer (just for comfort purposes):
- 1 standard green and 1 standard red LED
- 2 resistors of 330 Ohm (for the LEDs)
- I used 4600 Ohm resistors instead of the 5100 Ohm ones in the EmuComBox, but that is not important... 
- one standard (cheap) printboard with cupper lanes on it, either epoxy or cardboard sized minimum 6 cm by 6 cm.
- 1 DB9 SUBD female connector.

For cases and cables it depends on your needs and wishes; the print design allows for cases/housings as small as 6.3 by 6.3 cm.  
For mechanical stuff e.g. to attach connector and other components to the printboard, you'd better wait for the build manual.
You may have to order or shop for additional parts for that...

maybe some unusefull stuffs i bought, but nevermind.
i've build a Marshall 1969 plexi 100 watts clone ( jimi Hendrix ... , fillmore east, woodstock ... ) , some fuzz effects, some univibes, some repairs on an echoplex ep3, or on an italian vox 846, so i think i'll be ok for the soldering. 
can't wait ! ; ) 
i'm allready collecting the emax samples on the other yahoo group, but i wonder if there's a site where it's possible to get every sample library ever made for the emax, to complete my emulator II librarys. i'll try to collect every samples that the EMXP can use, and try it in my emulator II, with a soundfont version for each sample, so i could use them on a laptop, for lives too.

i think that the last step will be that one day, the emulator II might be controled from a pc, like with sound designer, but with a usb cable ; ) 
a new sound designer software, linked with emxp that could load samples just like some itunes software ; )

No i think the last step will be when the software becomes VST compatible.
That way the soft interface could sit in an Ableton rack like MidiQuest does�
for certain machines being controlled via sysex and CC's. �GUI drag and drop
for Clips, .waves, and EII voices would be amazing too. �

i'm allready collecting the emax samples on the other yahoo group, but i wonder if there's a site where it's possible to get every sample library ever made for the emax, to complete my emulator II librarys. i'll try to collect every samples that the EMXP can use, and try it in my emulator II, with a soundfont version for each sample, so i could use them on a laptop, for lives too.

i think that the last step will be that one day, the emulator II might be controled from a pc, like with sound designer, but with a usb cable ; )
a new sound designer software, linked with emxp that could load samples just like some itunes software ; )

That's my next project :-)

I think I have the full RS422 instruction set re-engineered during the past weeks, so most functions of the EII are controllable via USB/RS422 now. And thus also by a VST.
Unfortunately this instruction set is lacking a few fundamental instructions: creating (= adding new) presets, voices and samples. The instructions so far always assume existing presets, samples and voices in the EII memory. 
The Emax SYSEX instruction set is better from this perspective.

However, there's a work around which makes really everything possible (but it will take more communication/processing time for the above mentioned functions). 
Maybe I can even find some tricks to do it in another -faster- way, because the EII instruction set is so low-level that it's probably possible to cheat the machine and to go further than SoundDesigner for EII ever did.   

Now I urgently have to study how to design and code VSTs :-)
And plug the whole EMXP codebase into that thing.
A multi year plan I guess...
Especially because the Mirage, DSS1 and Prophet 2000 are waiting for some support by EMXP too...
Not to forget a GUI...

Awsome ! great great project. if you want i can take a look on how to build vst machines.  but i couldn't reprogramm emxp into it i think. 
What i can do to help, would be to draw the interface, you know .. the image that you've got of a synth clone into cubase, with the knobs and all ... 
i can do some photoshop to give you some pictures that you can use. Here that could be simply an emu II with maybe some mods on it, and with a screen somewhere , in the floppy drivers place maybe. well, to think about, we've got time, and you'd have to tell me what parameters you'll have then, to control an emu II, if it can be the same knobs as on the real one ... but i don't think so, as some might be different, some parameters would be added as you say that you can cheat the emu II.

we could transform the image of the emu II, keeping the spirit of the look. and it could swap between different synths, samplers as you say : DSS1 , etc ... 
they did a nice job on the prophet V , and prophet VS. 

not to forget that it doesn't clone the machine, but it controls the real machine, and allows to use the samples of one, into another one, like the emu II. so if one just have an emu II, he could use it as an emax or something else, through these analog filters, and these controls. 
But if it's not the machine itself ... it could at least, when you don't have the machine, become a soundfont player, to simply play these samples. 
i could help to transfer the samples into each format, and establish and classify a library, with everything we can find. At least for the emu II, when i'll can use EMXP. i 'm ok to receive every samples from every machine, with infos on the original lists. yousendit.com works fine for that purpose. then i an transmit it to you, as well as the pictures for the vst. i think it's a long work. hope this could help.

the picture of this vst emu II could stand like when you open your car to see the engine, and here it would be to work on the sample, with everything ( and perhaps more ) that could be done into sound designer, but here with a beautiful wave, and interface.
