E-II doesn't respond to MIDI IN

E-II doesn't respond to MIDI IN

2010-03-13 by Gil

I connected my E-II to a MIDI source. Set the basic channel to 1 and the mode to OMNI. However, I can't get it to respond to key messages. Tried different channels, same results. Tried to connect the cable to other MIDI devices - respond well. Any idea / suggestions ?

The E-II responds to midi on a per preset basis. Are you sure the E-II preset you are trying to control has assigned active voices which correspond to the note-on messages you are sending?

Does this means that I have to program MIDI setting for each preset I use ? Is this done the same way I described ? ie:

- Loading a diskette bank
- Choosing a preset
- Pressing the Preset Definition button and then 30
- Pressing 32 for MIDI
- Using slider A to set the midi channel number

It doesn't work for me :/

Thanks !

Preset Definition 32 is "Replicate Preset" and does not apply here. I was referring to Preset Definition 22 and 23 (Assign Voice/Edit Assignment). -In addition to your Preset Definition 30 midi channel/mode assignments for the preset you are trying to trigger; make sure there are active voice assignments which correspond to your incoming note-on messages received at the E-II Midi-In.

If you can trigger the E-II from its own keyboard with local control on (preset def 30), it is likely your voice assignments are correct. You also might check if your controller is sending midi volume information and what those values are. If you still have trouble after confirming your preset settings are correct and after verifying this occurs with multiple E-II banks, then your midi-in problem may be in hardware.

PS: Backlight replacement info can be found by searching the group message archives and known backlight vendors are listed in the group links section.

Thank,

Yah, I was actually referring to 30, not 32. When I play the "local" keyboard all sounds are heard, MIDI controller can control other syntsh without issues, MIDI cable is good, do you think this is a hardware problem ? How can I test the MIDI OUT ? Should the E-II keyboard send MIDI NOTE signals ?

Yes, the E-II should be transmitting midi data generated by its keyboard, wheels, and pedals. Plug a midi cable from the E-II Midi-Out to the Midi-In of another device to test. TIP: If you connect to a sequencer/computer you can record and inspect the midi data being generated by the E-II.

OK so this was a hardware issue eventually. Bad midi in connector solder joint and corrossion.
