Replacement disk drives from an old PC

Replacement disk drives from an old PC

2010-02-14 by Gil

I could put my hands on a couple of 5.25 diskette drives from an old PC.

The make is Tecmate NPH-502. How do I know if it can be used in the E-II ? Any chance I can make the unit go bad if I connect them in and try to boot ?

There is a (short) list of compatible drives in the group database:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/emulatorII-list/database

From the Emulator Archive:

Replacement 5.25" Floppy Drive: E-mu System used a number of different drives including:

     Shugart SA465-3AA 5.25"

The drives are DS/QD floppy disk drive, with 360kb/500kb of unformatted/formatted space.

New 5.25" drives are no longer manufactured. The best replacement is a TEAC FD55GFR-7220 (in black), but these are difficult to locate as they have been out of production since 1999. Try eBay or a legacy PC component supplier. They have an operational life of 20,000 hours. You will need to set the ID to either 0 or 1 depending on whether it is drive 1 (upper) or drive 2 (lower). You will also need to set the RY strap to output a ready signal on pin 34. We have NOT tested this procedure.

Thanks,

But what would happen if I connect the two 5.25 drives I have here, taken from an old PC ? Are the likely to use the same voltages ?

I thought of trying to connect them to see if they can work it the E-II......

I could not find any specs online for the Tecmate NPH-502 you want to try. I wouldnt think there would be a huge risk trying it, but Im not guaranteeing anything since your drive specs and jumper options are completely unknown to me. If you do get it working, please add the make/model to our database.

The voltages ate the same but the settings are differnt, you will have to shut the unit off each time you make a settings change.

Nothing bad can happen but the drive will just not read, you will have to restart the Ell after each jumper changes.
