Emulator sounds for sale

Emulator sounds for sale

2010-02-03 by rodm99_99

Hi,

I wanted to come to this forum with a Question:
Does anyone still sell EII sounds?

The reason why I ask is I recently copied my entire EII library which included all 3 OMI Universe of sounds, the 100 original factory disks, FMS library, Burmer library and some homemade banks and samples. I now use the samples and banks in modern software based samplers. I've had a couple of inquires about people wanting EII banks and I was going to "give" them a copy of the samples but I did not want to do so if people are still selling them and making a living off selling them. Please let me know if this is the case and post any resources of people selling the EII banks in EII format.

Thanks,
Rod

I second this. Does anyone know who has the 3 OMI Universe of Sounds?

I believe the third OMI was Northstar banks which are - believe it or
not - still sold through Northstar.

The first two were among others made by Douglas Morton who is still
selling these samples/CDROMs in some form through his company Q-Up Arts.

I bought the two OMI CDROMs through him a couple of years ago. They
are not available in SD2 format, but in CDS3 and .WAV format.

This type of offer/request is not permitted here. I know it is frustrating, but we do not have the necessary permissions to legally distribute any of the commercial sound libraries you are referencing.

Please read archived message #1997 and take your future trade details off-list.

Marketplace visibility, evidence of current support, and the amount of information available; all have no bearing on whether these libraries are still an enforceable copyright in someones portfolio.

E-mu Systems (and their sound libraries) are now holdings of Creative (creative.com), permission needs to come from their legal department. I dont know who holds FMS/K-Muse (sadly, Richard Burmer passed away in 2006 http://www.richardburmer.com/memorial.htm).

The properties in question may still be considered financial assets and may have been passed on, acquired, or sold. If a company went bankrupt, rights may be currently held by some faceless banking institution...I just dont know. What I *do* know is; we dont have written permission to distribute them here and one complaint of copyright infringement to Yahoo is all it takes to shut this group down.

Im not a copyright attorney and I have no desire to become one. I dont possess the factual proof required to unequivocally state that someones intellectual property is now public domain. My (and the other moderators) only allegiance here is to ensure this groups continued existence, and that the creators of these libraries are just as respected and welcome here as everyone else.

As previously stated; if anyone here is successful in securing written permission from the current copyright holders concerning legal distribution, the moderators will discuss changing this policy for any affected commercial libraries. Until then, the "Private Trading Only" policy stands.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation,

Hi,

It has been 3 years but I did talk to Doug Morton who created several banks on (i believe) at least Universe of sounds 1&2. He had talked about re-releasing some of the samples in other sampler formats. He lives only about 2 hours from me. I think I'll contact him and see what he says about the subject.

Thanks,
Rod

Interesting is if those sound banks will be re-edited in a most common format , a lot of people will manifest a real interest in using them more and making again very well-known the EII. But, what I 'm really dreaming about is a virtual plug ,, E-MU Emulator 2'' in same good -looking BLUE   ...just like Arturia did for theCS-80 monster .Can you imagine that ?

I contacted Douglas Morton from Quparts and they still sell the Universe of sounds CDs and will offer them in other formats. I knew that they still had the CDs that could be read only with a CDS3 drive but with esynthesist's EMXP program, those disks will soon be able ro be read and loaded from PC. Am I correct in this assumption?

Thanks Rod. I hope you extended him an invitation to join our group. Any idea if he would be agreeable to offering a discount on these two libraries to our members?

Im aware that Doug worked for Optical Media International before starting Q-Up Arts, but did you find out anything about OMIs demise and how Q-Up Arts inherited the distribution rights for the OMI content?

PS: Please watch your subject headers Rod. Only group moderators should be prefixing message titles with "MOD" which denotes administrative content, thanks.

Hi Hexafuzz,

Sorry for the Mod header. I must of replied to a moderator to get that in the subject line. I'll be more careful! I did forward your invitation to Douglas Morton. I'll be interested if he offers a discount to the group. There are a lot of new EII users looking for libraries. There are also former EII users that may still want the library if the sounds can be recreated to sound as good as the samples with the original hardware. There is a lot you can do with modern software samplers to make the sample sound good but I realize there is nothing like the original hardware with the samples that were created for that hardware. I'll forward his response.

Thanks,
Rod

Doug here from Q Up Arts. Over the years since OMI, I've been still using the vintage samples we did then. I have most of them in EXS, but ran across an app called Redmatica which will export into 4 platforms at once. I've also cleaned up some of the content.

Welcome Doug, great to have you aboard! As one of the few commercial libraries available for the Emulator-II, many of us are still using the vintage OMI samples as well. Your work and involvement with these libraries is well appreciated here. We have an OMI folder in our photo gallery, so please feel free to contribute any old pics/docs you might feel relevant.

Considering its now 2010, we would enjoy hearing any stories you might like to share concerning your days at OMI and the creation/marketing of the "Universe of Sounds" libraries. Were they developed specifically for the Emulator-II or were they designed open ended and ported where needed? Any recording specs you can remember concerning these samples? Whats the back story concerning Northstar Productions coming on board with (and later retaining) Volume 3? Any Emulator-II specific sampling/looping tips youd like to share?

We understand that you still offer Volume 1 & 2 of these libraries for purchase through Q Up Arts. As many new members show up here just having purchased a second, third, or fourth hand Emulator-II with no disks/sounds included; we would appreciate it if you would please let the list know what Emulator-II compatible formats you have available and the current pricing to our members. Thanks!

PS: Looks like you encountered the same posting problem as Rod. Please double check your subject headers when replying to existing messages as only group moderators should be prefixing message titles with "MOD" which denotes administrative content, thanks.

Best,
Hexafuzz

Your work and involvement with these libraries is well appreciated here. We have an OMI folder in our photo gallery, so please feel free to contribute any old pics/docs you might feel relevant.

Thanks!

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-02-06 by sugawolf_jeezy

Are the first 2 OMI libraries sold in an EII or DPX1 ready format? I guess I'm thinking SD files or something that could be easily transferred to disks with EMXP or DPXTools. Key for me would be preserving the preset data, rather than just a bunch of raw audio files. (Excuse my ignorance but I have, to this point, only worked with floppies and am a little hazy on how this works.)

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

I have successfully "translated" several EII banks to DPX-1 format via DPX tools (praise E-Synthesist ;))
They are exact clones of the EII banks.

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

So the only libraries currently available for sale are

1) OMI 1 and 2 from Doug
2) The Northstar floppies at http://www.northstarsamples.com/EIIFloppies.html

Is that right?

Correct, and we are still waiting for Doug to specify/confirm what E-II compatible formats he has available and their pricing to our members.

If anyone is looking for classic EII sounds in a more modern format, I share your pain. There isn\u2019t much out there to be perfectly honest. However, last year I contacted Digital Sound Factory, a company born out of the old E-MU and with a working partnership with E-MU\u2019s new owners, Creative.

http://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/

They produce many libraries in many of today\u2019s current formats, including E-MU\u2019s own EmulatorX. I asked them if, via their long and illustrious history, they had got any original EII material and their reply was that they had every factory library and then some! Answering my question about whether they intended to do anything with it, the answer was a definite yes, but not at this current time L

They do, out of interest, sell a set of sample libraries featuring the entire EMAX factory sample set, which contains many EII sounds\u2026.

;

http://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=emax

So, I guess we\u2019ll have to wait and if you\u2019re as keen as I am, you may want to get in touch with them and badger them until they relent ;o)

All the best,

Rob.

...perhaps I could remind the members of the group that EMXP allows almost 100% conversion of EII SD soundbanks to SoundFont2 :-)

I specifically added this SF2 support to EMXP to make sure that vintage EII banks like the ones from OMI would survive in modern (soft)samplers.
I've chosen SoundFont2 because it's a documented standard and because it is supported by almost all modern (soft)samplers.

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-02-08 by esynthesist

One of the beta testers on eiiiforum has converted *all* OMI (UOS1/UOS2) and northstar (UOS3) banks successfully (he says).
I have translated a lot of them too.

However these banks are copyrighted - so their converted SF2 versions are copyrighted too I guess. So uploading these examples is probably illegal.

But everyone can try this out theirselves, e.g. with some Emu factory banks - most of us have at least a few of those, right ?.

There is the guy who works for Open Labs who did it. Jim Stout. He was about getting my EII but the packing way too expansive to ship in USA .So I decided fixing it and keep it. Forever. Back to the issue, he converted EII soundbanks and used them on an Open Labs Neko. Thing that I will do as well.

Hmm....

I dont know, I mean, there are numerous transactions on ebay of
factorysounds for various samplers.

Trading factorydiscs ( in various formats ) shouldnt be a problem. Or ?

OMI and North Star sounds on the other hand.....

BTW how did he do that? it's hundreds of files... I don't know how access batch conversion or command line parameters if you have it. Manually - it's impossible )))

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

He must have taken his time for it :-)
EMXP has no batch interface (yet).

But you can select multiple or even all EII files for conversion in the selection screen (use 'M' or 'A' hotkeys), and EMXP will translate them all.
The only "problem" is that you have to confirm each translation by pressing ENTER and ESC, so you have to stay at the computer... True, it's boring but it goes pretty fast if you put yourself on automatic pilot on your PC keyboard (I just did 17 EII-->SF2 translations in 10 seconds).

Or you can just translate the banks that you are interested in :-)

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-02-09 by Jeremy Campbell

Doug replied to me off list that the OMI 1 & 2 cds that he has are in
SD format and $79 each. So theoretically, those could be converted
with EMXP to SoundFont2, or DPXtools to DPX floppies, no?

The price seems reasonable. I'm going to buy one soon, but need to do
a bit more research to decide which one. If anyone has any opinions I
would love to hear. Or better yet any demos/examples.

It's a pity IMO that the Northstar disks are so expensive and only on
floppies. Maybe someone who has converted them all to SD could offer
them a cd which, they could then duplicate and sell... or maybe they
don't really care. I can't imagine they sell many of those floppies.

Hi all.

I too have been emailing with Doug in the past and he is an extremely nice and easy guy to communicate with :-).

I bought the two CDROMs he has available, and they are indeed in "Sound Designer" format but NOT "Sound Designer for EII" format.

Meaning; you CAN import the samples into any softwaresampler using appropriate conversion applications (or Emulator II for that matter using SD for EII), but it is NOT the .EII banks or SD4EII banks format. So you will have to create all the presets and settings yourself.

The SD for EII banks were - to my knowledge - only available through the OMI/CDS-3 system.
So someone converted these into SD for EII format at some point - and I thank the lord for people like that.

Let me know if I am wrong here Doug :-)

Thanks for clearing this up Ken. This does indeed make this a deal breaker for many of us.

Doug, you have been pretty silent on this topic and we could really benefit from your expertise. I hope you realize as a member of this list you are welcome to post and promote/discuss any products you may have available which specifically concern the Emulator-II.

If your available libraries are not in Emulator-II ready formats, you might consider contacting E-Synthesist (one of our moderators).

E-Synthesist has authored some wonderful utilities which will convert many existing formats (ie: OMI CDS3) to E-II compatible sound banks (Mac formatted "Sound Designer for EII" CD-Roms are your best bet if youre interested in selling a few here).

Doug,

team up with E-synthesist and supply a couple of SDII CD-rom for 99USD each
or 149 for both.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: Emulator sounds for sale

To be honest - in my view these libraries is only really REALLY good coming out of my Emulator II :-).

The SD samples I got from Q-Up Arts (Doug) are all fantastic, but 'the sound' is definetely a combination of the OMI samples and the Emulator II.

The reason I did not start converting the library with Dougs approval is that I would prefer someone (read: maybe me) to sample each note on the Emulator II to make it as authentic sounding as possible - and THAT is a lot of work :-).
Authenticity is really important to me.

If Doug feels this is something worth undertaking, lets let him come up with his own pricing. That said, if enough people here are interested, I would hope he will consider offering a volume discount (group buy) to our members.

Sounds like he has both.

There are a few user banks in the files section here on Yahoo. I just converted them to soundfont and it was quick and painless. (If there's an appropriate place to upload them, I can do that too.)

They don't sound as good as on the EII of course, but it's a decent approximation. Since I don't have an EII/Mac setup, I plan on using this as a way to quickly preview a lot of sounds without having to wait for a disk to load. Thanks E-Synth!

I guess I'm getting a little lost in these file formats. So I gather that CDS3 is the format used in the CD Rom drive that OMI produced. These must contain all the bank/preset info right? There is no way to convert them?

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-02-10 by esynthesist

These are the formats discussed until now:
- SoundDesigner: this is a fileformat for files containing only sample information, used by some SoundDesigner software versions. It is one of the "more compatible" SoundDesigner formats for sample/audio interchange between various SoundDesigner sofware packages. But no preset or voice parameter information is available in these files.
- SoundDesigner for EII: this is a fileformat for files containing full Emulator II banks. So all sample info, preset info, sequencer info and so on is stored in these files. But these files are unique for use with the EII and are (as far as I know) only supported by the SoundDesigner for EII variant.
- CDS3: is a diskformat used on CDROMs by OMI/Northstar in the eighties. It's like a FAT system, but then different :-) CDS3 disks contain full Emax or Emulator II soundbanks. The fileformat of the individual banks stored on a CDS3 cdrom is very comparable with the SoundDesigner for EII fileformat.

Note that the SoundDesigner for EII fileformat is in fact just a dump of the memory of the Emulator II.

All EII soundbanks on a CDS3 cdrom can be extracted to individual SoundDesigner for EII files. I have a small utility for that, but I didn't make it public available yet because it's so basic (not robust let's say) that I expect too many support questions if I simply make it available to everyone. I'm planning to include native CDS3 support in EMXP in the near future though. Perhaps I will also slightly improve the small utility in order to make it asap available for download - yes, why wouldn't I do that :-)

The (extracted) SoundDesigner for EII files can be used on a Mac with SoundDesigner for EII, or can be translated to some other filelayouts (like SoundFont2) with e.g. EMXP. The next version of EMXP will also allow to upload/download these files directly between Windows PC and Emulator II, but a special USB/RS422 adapter will be required.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-02-10 by Rodney Moore

Hi everyone,

My history with the EII is I bought one in 1986 (with factory disks) and purchased the CDS3 drive with the first 2 Universe of Sounds CDs in 1987. I picked up Northstar gold Universe of sounds CD (vol. 3) in the early 90s and then bought a mac and the SD package with cable and FMS, burmer library and 100 factory disk library from emulator archive in the late 1990s. By putting the Mac in center position (connected to both the EII and the CDS3), I would load one bank at a time from the CDS3 drive to the EII, then to the mac and then save the EII files in SD format. I took the whole EII library to PC and used the fantastic program by Esynthesis called EMXP. The conversion to soundfont 2 went quickly by selecting all files for translation. It isn't a batch interface but it translated all the banks and sample assignments (1 bank at time) pretty quickly. The sample bank quality playback varies from bank to bank using a SF player like SFZ. I also retranslated the sound font banks to kompakt 3.5 using the UI in kompakt. I agree the hardware to play the EII samples is amazing. I have used the translated soundfont 2 banks in recordings and it is hard to tell the difference from the original EII sound. This is not true for every bank but it was definitely worth my while to have EII banks that have unlimited polyphony and that could be used with MIDI sequencing with multiple channels. I have several sample softsynths and it is interesting to compare each from the originals (NI B4 to original hammond B3, korg polysix to korg analog collection, ect) I know this debate can continue forever talking about the warmth of the sound of analog vs. the harshness of digital. I guess the point I'm making is it is great to have the option of using original hardware with the sounds we all know and love but it is great to have the additional options of finding new applications of the old samples to reuse in new projects as well. I think there is still a market out there to appeal to both.

Thanks,
Rod

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-03-02 by tomulcahy

esynthesist, thanks for the excellent info on the various file formats. And bigger thanks for the new version of EMXP!! I've been importing soundfont format into Kontakt, and it's a joy to hear these sounds again all looped and mapped.

May I ask- what were the "optimizations" made to the EII 8 bit compressed audio format? Was this for converting from, or to?

Re: Emulator sounds for sale

2010-03-05 by esynthesist

The optimizations applied in version 2.7 build 2 were only related to the compression/decompression algorithm for the Emax-I.
The previous version caused distortion and clicks in the sound when sounds with high volumes/loudness were converted. This was especially true in the conversion from 16-bit to 8-bit.

The engine for EII is still the original one. It's not the same as the Emax-I engine. The principles are the same, but the actual mathematical curves are different. I have never experienced distortion problems in the EII conversions, and I didn't receive reports on it so far, so I didn't touch it :-)
But actually the new curves used for the Emax now also work fine for the EII.

Hi Esynthesist:

This actually raises a great point and is something I've been meaning to ask you. How does EMXP handle bit rate conversions from .wav and .aif to the Emulator II 8-bit format? Is there some sort of dithering involved? Will EMXP even accept .wav and .aif files with bit rates higher than 16? For example, I work in Ableton Live, which operates natively in 32-bit floating point notation, so any files I export from that and load into EMXP will be at that bit rate unless I expressly downconvert them during the render.

In short, I'm curious if there is an "ideal" workflow for prepping .aif and .wav files before converting them in EMXP to the Emulator II format. And is there a different approach for the 16-bit Emulator III?

Thanks again for creating such a great program!

Best,
DBM

There's a difference of course between bit *rate* and bit *resolution*.

EMXP natively only works with a resolution of 16 bit. WAV files with higher resolutions (e.g. 24 bit) are simply not accepted. One exception are 24-bit samples in SoundFont2 files, but the upper 8 bit part of these samples is simply ignored. This is also the standard way of dealing with 24 bit SF2 files in 16-bit SF2 engines.

Conversions between 16-bit resolutions and lower resolutions (like 12-bit in the future add-ons for Prophet2000 and Korg DSS) are simple linear conversions. But the conversion between 16 bit and 8 bit for Emax and EII is not linear: for this a unique differential algorithm is being applied.

With respect to the play back frequency or bitrate, so far EMXP does not contain an advanced rate convertor which takes into account physical side effects of linear bitrate conversions. I didn't implement that kind of advanced convertor (yet) because the normal linear intrapolation/extrapolation method still seem to give very acceptable results.

When importing WAV files in EMXP and converting them to some target sampler format, an optimal result *could* be achieved if you would prepare the WAV files with an advanced WAV editor before importing them in EMXP. This preparation would consist of (a) convert to a samplerate which is natively supported by the sampler (like 27778 Hz for EII) and (b) convert to 16-bit resolution. In some cases (c) loudness normalization could help too - that's something EMXP will not do.

But in general I really think that just making sure that the WAV files are 16 bit should be sufficient, EMXP will take care of all other conversion issues and so far the results are really fine.

Everything I've ever made to go into EMXP was prepared this way- mostly because I could never quite guess what was happening to the data as it was being ..."Translated" :)

I use SoundForge which has the capability to store a preset for each of the different procedures. I have every samplerate conversion available as a preset for the various samplers I use- Emax I, Mirage, etc. This can really help streamline everything since when finished editing a sample I can just click on "EMAX-2778" or "EMAX-15625"...

Is there any way we could have the option in EMXP to disable conversions altogether, and it would error out if upon receiving anything it didn't like ?

I wish there was a master table at the very end of the manual like an appendix that would list all the input specs to EMXP for all supported samplers similar to the "Conversion constraints of the Emax"

cheers, [w]

Disabling conversion tasks seems a bit difficult, especially when converting between sampler formats because not many people will try to or are capable of changing the audio data in original EIII/Emax/SoundFont/Akai banks. But I can imagine that this feature could be useful somehow for WAV-to-sampler conversions.
I'll have a look at it.

But as I said, the only sample/audio-related conversions in EMXP are frequency conversion and resolution conversion. EMXP does not perform any other conversion on the actual sound data. Its main focus is on conversion of voice and preset data like filter settings and envelopes. Which is not applicable in WAV conversions of course.

If EMXP detects that the original sample frequency is compatible with the target sampler, it will NOT convert this frequency unless you specifically asked for it (e.g. in order to be able to fit a large 2MB EIII soundbank into a smaller 512K Emax-I soundbank).
Bit resolution conversions are only done if necessary (currently only for Emax-I and EII).

I will try to add additional details in the manual in the next release (almost ready - new version supports RS422 for EII and Emax-I)
