Hi once again and thanks for replying to my questions,
I have booted up the E2with different disks every time it says hd minis 20 r 2.6 so i guess it does not come from a floppy .I purchased the machine years ago from martin nucombe when he closed down his synth museum, it arrived with keys that had fallen out ,it was sent back and a guy called Chris ringham repaired and upgraded it for me ,i guess this explains why it may be the hd r2.6

So the lids off and i;ve looked at the two big boards .
the output board says rev 1 1984
the digital board say rev 1 1984
what else do i need to look at to see if it is rs 422 compatible ,you both mention different macs this leaves me a little confused as to what i should start looking for classic se or legacy ?, the upgrade kit that route 66 have for sale to get the machine to r3.1 will this do the job .by the way im not a tech so the inside of the machine doesn't mean a lot to me ,i just play the keys ,another issue with the machine is the pitch,tuning/to get in tune i have to go to real time control and reset each sound turn the pitch off can this be corrected so i can use the pitch wheel ?thanks with regard to 5.25 disks i will get on to them and order a few ,but what is the best source for E2 original library's and are there any techs in the uk who specialize in servicing emulators .
cheers Mick.

Mick,
The E-II OS (again 3.1 is newest) loads from floppy disk each time you boot the machine. It just seems all of your disks contain the HD OS so you need to find a formatted disk with the proper OS software. If you are in the UK your best bet is contacting Rob at Emulator Archive. He can answer all your questions, help you obtain cables and disks, as well as point you to a proper tech. Please read the information located here:

As for a Mac choice they are all "Legacy" Macs. You are going to need to do some research on your own as there are many models that will work (again please use the group links section and compatibility database). It is my experience that you will do best with a Mac that has at least 8mb of ram, a decent sized harddrive, the ability to read 1.44mb floppies, a Cd-rom drive, and OS 7.1 or higher. Most if not all 68030 based Macs have these capabilities. Good Luck.
