Mac Classic won't boot after connecting to EII

Mac Classic won't boot after connecting to EII

2008-12-12 by George

Hex, John and Mike, Thanks a lot for your help. The SD installation
worked. I then proceeded to connect my Classic to the EII for the
first time. I connected it to the modem port and when I turned the Mac
on it froze up with a black/white striped screen. I then removed the
SD cable and tried to reboot, but now it won't boot anymore. I get the
black/white scrambled stripes screen everytime I try to boot it. The
Classic was working rock-solid it seemed, until I connected it to the
EII. I had launched SD a couple of times before I connected it and
everything seemed fine. Does anyone have any ideas what could have
happened? I have a Macintosh Classic, 4MB Ram, 40mb hd, with OS 7.0
installed.
Any help and tips are greatly appreciated.

George

I think the fact the mac freaked out while you had the cable is a co-incidence.. A VERY common problem with mac classics is the leaking of capacitors on the digital board.. I know.. it happened to mine.

(Assuming your cable is a proper cable, and not a fault.. but even then, I'd find it hard to believe that it screwed your mac)

Luckily, the fix can be either, kinda simple, or if you want, much more complicated.

You will need to open up your mac.. this involves getting a long torx driver, which can be a bit difficult.. I was lucky in that I used a dremel to modifiy a long allen key..

then you need to remove the digital board, and basically wash it in warm soapy water.. give it a gentle scrub with a plastic scrubber to remove the sticky residue that has leaked from the capacitors on the board (Small tiny coke can looking things)

Once you have done this, dry the board, then dry it some more, then dry it again for a few days.. ie, it must be dry... I used a hair dryer on low setting for a while... then let it sit in the sun for a few days.

Re-assemble the mac, and hopefully it should be fine..

The more permanent solution is to wash the board THEN replace the surface mount caps on the digital board.. this can fall out of the league of most people.. and I just washed my board and it fixed my problem up..

HEAPS of references to this problem on this site.

Nice people lurking here too.

Mike

A stated in here, I would replace your battery before anything else.
I've read elsewhere before about screen stripes appearing caused by
flat motherboard batteries.

My mac can boot up fine with no battery installed... The screen stripes / checkerboard pattern is pretty much a guarantee that caps have leaked on the digital board.. and while a few days later you might try it and it'll work fine, the problem will come back..

By all means, replace the battery (It's more than likelt past it's expiry date), but I'm pretty confident that the problem will return regardless.

As mentioned before - Wash the digital board of all residue (It's a sticky substance)
And if you are keen, replace the capacitors.

Mac Classic won't boot after connecting to EII

2008-12-13 by George

Hi, tonight I gave it another shot and the Classic booted fine again.
I even got SD to communicate with the EII almost instantly, which I'm
really thrilled about btw. I was reading in the Mac forums you guys
recommended and it sounds indeed like the battery or leaky caps. I
will have to try to open the Classic up if the problem comes back and
find the culprit. Sounds like dismantling a compact mac is quite the
endeavour considering the shocking hazard from the CRT, the long torx
driver and case splitter tool needed...
Anyways...thanks a lot for your help guys. I think I'm going to play
with my EII now ;)
