Mac & SCSI Headaches

Mac & SCSI Headaches

2008-11-19 by mrjdevries

I've got a Mac Classic II & MAC IIsi..

I'm having a world of pain trying to get either of them to see s SCSI
CD drive..

(I've tried the obvious one of booting the macs up with a CD in the
drive... the only CD i've tried is the Big EII CD )

I've tried to put the drivers in, but they are compressed.. I don't
have the compression program (Stuffit) and that is supplied as a
binary..

The MAC CLASSIC is running 7.0.1 and the IIsi is 7.5os

As I only have a PC connected to the net, I don't know how to install
stuffit, so i can uncompress the SCSI drivers etc..

Please please help.. this is making me turn into a nut case.

Regards
Mike

Mike. I've just done this myself using a Mac Colour Classic running OS
7.1 which works fine with SD4E2 and an Apple SCSI CD ROM.

Download the Stuffit program from the Yahoo Mac Utilities page to your
PC.

Also download the Mac Disk program from here:

http://www.macdisk.com/downlen.php3

Open the Mac Disk program on your PC and transfer the Stuffit program
onto a floppy disk within the Mac Disk program. You may need to
create/format a mac floppy first and click yes if prompted to any
message about binary files.

Transfer the floppy to your Mac and and put the stuffit program on
there, open the program and your compressed driver files.

The CD driver I used successfully is Apple's Universal CD ROM Driver
5.3.1 that you can get here:

http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk.shtml

I don't know if this will work with all SCSI CD Roms but there are
others on there you could also try. Remember the CD icon will not
appear on your desktop until you insert a CD. Also, ensure you switch
on the SCSI CD ROM before booting the Mac.

Good luck !

John.

Thanks for your help... but i'm still having trouble.

I've installed mac disk... and I understand it's concept.

I've formatted the floppy, and then copied the binary file of stuffit (.BIN) over to the floppy disk using mac disk - so far so good.

When I put the disk into my mac, and try and execute the binary, my mac asks me what program i'd like to use to run this file... My only options are a document editor & stickies???
Neither (Obviously) work..

Any suggestions... I'm seriously pulling out my hair..

Thanks for your help so far.

Hey all..

It's gotten to a point with me, that if someone were to offer a service, to sell the appropriate floppies so that anyone could do a fresh install of MAC OS 7.5 or 7.0.1 etc and all the drivers for SCSI CD drives and Sound designer software I would gladly buy it off them (Assuming it will work)

Mike

Sounds like youre one step away from success. This may help:

If you are "seriously pulling out your hair" with a single bin file,
you probably wont enjoy dealing with a complete system rebuild from
floppy disks. If I were you, I would put that money towards a visit to
your local computer tech/repair shop who knows vintage Macs. What you
are asking above is a completely routine job for anyone who makes
their living repairing computers. If thats not an option, try your
proposal here: http://68kmla.net/forums/

The above is a zipped disk image (dsk). You will probably need Disk
Copy 4.2 on your Mac to use it.

In light of this, I have instead just uploaded a new self-extracting
version of Stuffit Expander to the files section. Please try this
first and report back to the group if it works or not. The new
self-extracting filename to download and try is: stuffit-expander.sea

Success!

Cheers for all your help.

I've now managed to get my Mac IIsi to talk to it's SCSI CD drive (I already had it talking to the EII)

I'll attack the Mac Classic II in a few days, and should be able to get it to talk to the SCSI CD drive also, but I still can't get it to talk to the EII... thats for another day.

Much regards
Mike

example an SE ;) seeing a CD-ROM-Drive?

Congratulations, was it the new self extracting version of Stuffit
Expander (stuffit-expander.sea) that finally worked for you???

Please report *specifically* what worked for you so in the future
others might benefit from your experience and struggle here.

Which drivers (CD-Rom extensions) have you tried?

Mac & SCSI Headaches -> My walkthrough to success

2008-11-21 by Mike de Vries

Specifically, what worked for me.

- The mac-disk software was very helpful. I used this to format a floppy in the mac format. I then placed the self extracting Stuffit file (.SEA) on this disk.

- I was then able to install Stuffit onto my mac. [ I was unable to ever get stuffit to my Mac, so this was the first small celebration ]

- Using 'mac disk'  I was then able to copy the CD Rom drivers (Apple_CD-ROM_D-5.3.1.sit) file onto a floppy.

- I then placed this floppy in my mac, and copied this file (Apple_CD-Rom5.3.1.sit) to another temporary folder on my mac.

- The next step, I'm not sure exactly what happend, but when I tried to open the CD-ROM.sit file, my mac was saying it was unsure what program to open it with... So I went to the PC-Exchange program (In the control panel on my mac) and set the ".SIT" extension to point towards the stuffit program.. Even after doing this , 'PC-exchange' only had the option of a 'text' document as it's default.. I'm not sure if all the above helped or not.

- I then dragged the 'Mac CD_rom.5.3.1.sit" file ontop of the stuffit program icon.. once I did this, A folder appeared next to where the "Mac CD.rom.5.3.1.sit" resided, and in this folder was a few files.. (One a text document.. which I think was created by the prior step..??) but the IMPORTANT FILE was the "MAC CD ROM5.3.1.EXTENSION"

- I placed this extension file in the extension folder!!!!

- Powering down the MAC with the CD rom on (Set to SCSI ID 3, AND TERMINATED!) and a CD inside.. and success!

I hope there is not any mis-information in my description.. this was as best as I remembered what happened.

Regards
Mike

Yes, this was a successful extraction. Depending on the Mac system
version and program version being used, file type associations may not
work as you are accustomed on the PC. Please see "Using StuffIt
Expander.txt" in the files section for more info on various ways to
expand files.

Thanks for the details, good to know the new self extracting version
of Stuffit Expander worked for you.

Mac & SCSI Headaches -> My walkthrough to success

2008-11-21 by Mike de Vries

Great!

I managed to get the Mac Classic (Running 7.0.1) to see it's SCSI CD drive now!

I installed Stuffit, but unlike on the Mac IIsi, I was unable to drag the CD SIT file ontop of Stuffit.

I double clicked on stuffit, and then went to the 'file' tab.. one option was un-compress or something similar.. I could then uncompress the CD.SIT archive, and place the uncompressed "Apple CD 5.3.1 Extension" in the extension folder.. after booting up with the SCSI CD drive connected (Set to ID 3) and a CD in the drive, the MAC was able to see the Drive.

Now, If I can get the classic seeing the Emulator II, I'll be a happy man.

Regards
Mike

Mike. My Mac classic colour works fine with OS 7.1 using either the
Modem or Printer port and Apple Talk on and off. Disk in the EMU II
runs OS 3.1. Good luck.

The Classic and Color Classic are based on different processor
architectures (68000 vs 68030), so comparing them may have little
benefit when troubleshooting SD communication errors.

That said, please *do* add your Color Classic info to the group
compatibility database:
