Start-up Freeze Problem Update

Start-up Freeze Problem Update

2008-11-03 by George

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much to everyone for you help. You guys rock!

Today I've spent some time with my EII trying to fire it up. I
checked/cleaned all Molex/ power connections. Pushed the 2 PCB
connectors. Pushed all the ICs. I removed and re-cleaned/reseated all
long ICs on the Digital board including the boot rom and the Z80
chips. But the problem remains. It still freezes up. Does anyone know
which ICs are directly involved in the booting/ sound-loading
process?
Maybe I can try to do another targeted cleaning/reseating of those...

I also would like to troubleshoot the PSU. I own a multimeter, but am
not sure what to look for in terms of what voltage needs to come out
of where. I really want to fix this thing. Has anyone in here
experience with the PSU and can tell me step by step what to look for?

I'm considering to bring this thing to a tech. Does anyone know of
someone in Southern California (between San Diego and LA) who's an
expert with EIIs?

Thanks in advance.

George

In my case, I resoldered all cable connections on the PSU side and
everything came back in line. Been a long time now since I opened mine
though, so Ill leave it to someone who's sure to give the exact voltages.

Not sure about being E-II experts, but these two are at least
competent. At the very least Im sure you could call, explain your
needs and see what/who they recommend.

I tried to google ed miller studio 9, but can't find him. Do you
have his phone number or email address by any chance? thanks so much.

same "scrambled screen" problems I had a while back on an EII. It
only took about 15-20 min. to finish the job. Eventually, I just went
ahead and replaced all of the electrolytic capacitors on the whole
PSU, and it has been running for a few years now, with absolutely no
problems since! Please note that this PSU had been sitting around,
separate from the EII itself, so it had no power going to it for a
while. I felt much safer working on it, otherwise I would have been a
bit nervous to start poking around on one that had been in-use. *YOU

brought them older pieces they were not too familiar with, that just
sat around un-touched for weeks, only to end up fixing them at home
myself. They should have no problem re-capping a PSU if you just
bring them the PSU only, but it will definitely cost you! I highly
recommend contacting Ed Miller over at a place called Studio9 on
Sunset Blvd. for anyone in the Los Angeles area. He's a bit of a
synth guru, and would have no problem fixing the PSU on an EII (I
believe he used to work at Roland). His prices are also extremely
reasonable and fair, which is pretty rare these days. Hope you get it
fixed soon!

YES! Its worth repeating again: Dont get ZAPPED!

I assume you mean "Advanced Musical" here (not advanced audio). Good
to have someone weigh in with hands-on experience.

Heres the URL for Ed: http://www.synthesizerrepair.com/

FWIW: I think George isnt sure his PSU is at fault at this point
(thats just the conclusion most of us are jumping to).

... which would be very expensive, because of the weight of this
machine. Just wait and look at ebay in europe. I would think that
nearly 10-15 EII`s go in a year on that platform - just in germany.
Just have a little patience. :-)

Hi Zom, you seem to regret that you sold your EII+ to me last year :-)
(ok, I admit this is not a very encouraging message :-), but anyway
good luck with your search)
