How to use an Apple CDROM drive with a Mac Classic

How to use an Apple CDROM drive with a Mac Classic

2008-10-04 by esynthesist

Hi all,

I have a problem with trying to get my Apple CDROM drive connected to
my Mac Classic 4/40.
The OS is v7.5 but it doesn't have all extensions and drivers installed.
So the Mac doesn't "see" anything when I simply connect the SCSI CDROM
drive to the Mac.

I tried to install the CDROM driver software which I found here:
http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk/
but after launching the installer it complains: my CPU is a 68000, not
a 68020 or higher, so the installation procedure is cancelled.

In the Mac compatibility list I noticed that at least one member is
using a Mac Classic + Apple CDROM (even with OS 7.0.1) so it must be
possible to use the 68000 machines with CDROM drives.

Does anyone know how to configure this machine and/or where to find the
required software to enable Apple CDROM drives on the Classic ?

Thanks in advance

Well .. I use an Apple CDROM drive with my Classic running MacOS7.01
downloaded freely from the Apple site.

I can’t really remember what CDROM driver I use for my Classic, but it was
surely downloaded from the Apple site somewhere:

http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html

If you DON’T figure it out let me know – and I’ll boot up the old Classic
and see J

You probably just need the extension itself without the installer.
BTW: The detailed descriptions for the directory you posted above are
here: http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk.shtml

Did you try the Sunrise driver?
http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk/cd-sunrise-22c.hqx

If Sunrise doesnt work, you might try the Toast CD-Reader extension
posted in the group files (Mac Utilities).

Try the Compact Mac forum here: http://68kmla.net/forums/index.php

For example, a quick look found this thread:

Thx Kenneth & Hexafuzz.

I'll try all of this.
But perhaps I will not have to use my Mac Classic and SoundDesigner
anymore... I just succeeded in transferring banks directly between
the EII and my Windows Vista machine (which - of course - has a CDROM
drive :-). So that will become the next major new feature in EMXP !

Though from a "vintage" point of view it would of course be great to
make the Mac+CDROM+EII combination work also, so I'll go for it.

Wow thats great news!!! :) What PC ports and cabling will EMXP use for
doing this?

Let us know if you need further help. If the solutions posted so far
dont work, I can email you some extensions to try.

Re: OT: How to use an Apple CDROM drive with a Mac Classic

2008-10-05 by esynthesist

I'll try the extension(s) next week ! I first want to optimize the
communication test program between my PC and the Emulator II :-)

The port I currently use is an RS422 port, which I added to my laptop
by plugging in an external USB<-->RS422 converter (widely available
on the internet).
The cable is a custom-built one with a male DB25 connector at the EII
side and a female DB9 connector at the PC side.

Excellent news!

Can we also assume that this SHOULD work for Mac users running Vista
under bootcamp as well?

Excited for this. Thanks!

I'm still in the process of optimizing the communication link between
the PC and the EII; the test programs I have are 100% reliable but
too slow at this moment.

Anyway: if I succeed in making all of this acceptable - which I'm NOT
sure about - it will certainly also run under Windows XP. It should
also work on a Mac running Windows via Bootcamp because the USB
drivers for external RS422 ports should work as soon as the Mac's USB
ports are recognized by Windows.

In the first phase I will not create software for editing sounds on
the EII - so EMXP will be limited to uploading and unloading banks.
I will however (as a second project) also reverse engineer the whole
editing stuff and investigate whether a kind of VST plugin for the
Emulator is possible (ok, maybe I'm dreaming now... this would not be
part of EMXP but become a separate piece of software).

Hi,
somebody updated about what kind of Harddisk can I put inside of eII? There is just one option for HD ? Or more models of Hd's? Can somebody please make a list of HD models that are certainly working into EII? Thanks anticipated.

Re: OT: How to use an Apple CDROM drive with a Mac Classic

2008-11-11 by esynthesist

A little bit later than planned, I actually tried today the suggested
solution of simply putting the 5.3.1 Apple CD driver in the
extensions folder of OS 7.5.3.
And it works !
So then I immediately created some HFS CD-ROMS with the free trial
version of TransMac. These CD-ROMS contain all my OMI & EMU & other
Banks.
Wow ! Now I have instant access to +1500 banks directly from my
Macintosh Classic (the internal 40 MB Hard drive was not really an
option...)
(OK, I planned to have the same feature directly from my PC but as
you know I'm still struggling with communication line stability
between my PC and the EII, so I will not throw away yet my Mac for
the coming months...years...centuries :-)

Thanks guys !!

Wow!
That's what I wanted, too, all the time. But I didn't get my mac
recognize my cd rom drive (as well as I didn't get my EIII to do this....)
I've got a Mac SE running system 6.01 (I think).
Does anybody know if the driver also works with that OS? Or any other
sulution?

Greetz,
Elm.

It's the driver on the link mentioned in the posting below.
You can find all possible drivers on
http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk.shtml

The one I used is the first Apple driver mentioned (5.3.1, 60K file).
I didn't use the installer file 5.3.2 (460K file).
Probably the sunrise driver, which can also be downloaded from that
page, is a good solution too...

Re: OT: How to use an Apple CDROM drive with a Mac Classic

2008-11-12 by esynthesist

Elm, the driver 5.3.1. was released with OS 7.6, so I guess there
might be a problem in using it on system 6.
Perhaps the sunrise driver is compatible with OS 6 ?
Or why don't you upgrade to system 7.x ??
PS: I'm using the very same Apple CD300 as I mentioned to you on
another group for connecting a SCSI cdrom to the EIII. So this cd-
drive seems to be quite a good fit for the Emu sampler family...

"...the very same Apple CD300..." - Yeah I thought so ::))
I do not upgrade because I'm afraid that I'm destroying my mac..
I once had OS problems and it was HELL to get it running again.
Anyway, to be honest: Sorting the Libraries by instrument families on
ZIP disks seems to be a really good alternative way of accessing the
libraries.
It would have been cool though... Think I already tried the sunrise
thang somewhen...

Good orchestra tubular bells bank?

2008-11-18 by Sean Wolcott

Looking for an Emu disk/bank, something along the lines of Blondie's
Rapture or Chic's I Want Your Love.

The Emu bank definitely doesn't cut it. Anybody used the northstar
tubular bells disk? Any ideas?

Thanks much!
