Hello Kevin: Have same model and this seems to be typical symptom of
these hard drives. I can assume when you power up unit the red l.e.d .
flashes 3 long and 5 or 6 short. The problem is in the "park"
actuator. When you power unit down the cluster needs to be parked at
zero so it has a reference point when it powers up again. If you remove
the drive from the cradle, 4 screws on sides, and look at the bottom of
drive, on the lower right corner you will see an arm with a lever
attached that tapers . Note the position of the arm and lever should be
horizontal and pointing to the front of the hard drive. If not,
carefully move it to horizontal as described. Make sure hard drive is
well grounded and power up and note that the pointer is moving,
normally at boot will cycle quickly in both directions until it finds
first cluster, which it will then boot up. Another symptom is after
you have booted up and load a bank, hard drive will cycle at random,
again a voltage problem, bad caps or bad zener diodes. You should also
see the magnet that lever recesses into. Make sure the magnet is clean
and free from dirt. A light shot of wd40 or equivalent on the arm would
be a good idea.
When the drive parks, the lever should be horizontal with respect to
the drive and the point should face front of drive.. Also check your
+5v feed and make sure voltage has not dropped, which leads to another
weakness, the power supply. Check the molex connector on power supply,
especially the red and yellow connections. If the molex looks dark at
the terminals you will need to fix to ensure a tight connection.
Hope that gets you in right direction...Doug
