absolute newbie here!!

absolute newbie here!!

2008-08-17 by Jason Herbert

Hi all,

I'm so excited I just got my Emulator II a couple days ago. I grew up
with an Ensoniq Mirage in the 80's and have wanted one of these since
then!

Anyway, I know there's a lot of things I need to learn here and I'd
love some direction as to where to start.

First, my software revision comes up as 2.3 and my serial number is
1075 (model 6028.)

I have two 5.25" drives, but the previous owner said something about
them being different "versions" and if I put one (wrong) version of
the diskette in the top drive, it would simply ERASE it. OMG! That
sounds just great. LOL!

Anyway, I guess that's my first issue. I'd like to figure out what
this "disk drive version" thing is all about so I'm not erasing disks.

Next I'd suppose I'd like to find out about Sound Designer and where
to look for that and the additional required hardware.

Just in quick browsing I'm seeing the discussion of a project that
might involve adding a new storage interface to facilitate modern
memory storage devices (i.e. SD cards?) I was curious about
installing a hard disk into my EII but maybe I should reconsider and
explore this more modern option if it's likely to come together.

I apologize for my complete and utter lack of knowledge of what I've
got here. I hope to learn quickly and get involved.

THANKS SO MUCH!
JH

Congratulations Jason and welcome to the group. You will find
everything needed to get you started (and more) in the groups file and
links sections and by searching the message archives. If you have a
specific question that hasnt been covered, feel free to ask.

What he told you (or how youve interpreted it) doesnt sound correct.
He was most likely talking about a software mismatch (disk overlay
error) that occurs when you use two disks with different E-II OS
versions (which will not erase your data).

Unless you specifically tell the machine to Save or Format, you should
not be in any danger of erasing disks. If you are really worried, you
can use a piece of tape to cover the write protect notch on the disk.

Youll need a legacy Macintosh computer and a cable. Please see the
groups file section, Mac compatibility database, Mac links, and search
the message archives.

Additional info is here:

PS: Since your machine is serial number 1075, pay particular attention
to the logic board issues mentioned there should you encounter problems.

Adding a hard disk to an E-II today will not be possible due to now
unavailable hardware and the project you noticed is still in
development. I would advise learning proper operation of your new
machine as-is and then focus on setting up a working Sound Designer
system as your first "upgrade".

Good Luck & Happy Emulating.

You`ve got a device from the good old eighties. And so it is very cool
to use it, like they have used in in the eighties. :-) What I mean is,
that it is lot of fun to use this nice sampling-machine together with
an old macintosh computer with "Sounddesigner for EII". And it works
pretty nice.

Best regards from germany and lots of fun with your EII
Heiko
