Uh uh...
my EII is back to life!!!! :D

it was easy as 123... the main connector on the PSU that goes to the boards
was a lil burned... i mean....one of the +5 volts pins (yellow cables pair)
had a "false contact" and in the long running some sparkling on it made it
unstable. so i had from a +4.3 volts to 0 when the contact was totally
absent.

I've found that the inside spring on that tip was quite totally faulty, so i
had to replace the whole connector... fortunately i've found a same one in
my old spares, connected all right...and now mates...it is working
perfectly... now i have a bright +5.10 on that pin.

I'm very happy...
next stage is to fix the display (that is almost gone), locate 3 missing
keys, try to fix the 5th voice and buy brand new eproms from Rob.

I will keep you all informed...

Ciao ciao...

Does anyone Know if the LCD display of the EII is the same that the Emax II´s. And if so where can I find it.
Thanks.

The e2 display should be the same for the e3, the sp12 and the sp1200... i
do not know about the emax cause i do not own any.
I think that Rob could clear this easily.

Emulator Displays

2002-05-25 by Info EmuArc

Hi,
The EII, SP-12, SP1200 (perhaps not final models which may be LED backlit)
all use the same blue 16x2 LCD with EL backlight, which is an Optrex unit.
It has no contrast variation from the OS or in hardware.
The Emax uses a different blue or blue/green 16x2 LCD with EL backlight, and
the make of LCD varied over time. You can vary the contrast via a hardware
trimmer on later models.
The EmaxII uses a different blue/green or yellow 16x2 LCD with EL backlight
and some may even be LED backlit. You can vary the contrast from software.
The EIII and EIIIX and ESI models us a 16x4 LCD with EL backlight, earlier
versions were Optrex but all sorts of alternatives were used. The EIII has
hardware contrast, the others have software controls.

Replacement LCD's from E-mu are very expensive and often unavailable (e.g.
Emax, EII). Third Party replacements are much cheaper but harder to find. We
are using new Optrex LCD's in our EII's ($20), but they are blue on blue
which makes them harder to read. We have replaced Emax LCD's with new
Purple/White LCD's which are working well. We can tell you where to get new
EII LCD's iin the UK.

A better route is to replace just the EL backlight, as the actually
characters of the LCD display rarely fail, its the EL strip that fades after
2000 hours use. This also means there are only 2 connections to unsolder and
the display can remain on the board. Visit www.backlights.co.uk for details,
we are testing EL replacements for EII and Emax at the moment, including a
rather cool RED backlight - Viral Emulators! They are easy to install but
you do need to be careful aligning the strip to ensure it covers the LCD
display area. EL's are $25.

Full details are on the web site in the repair pages. I recommend backlight
replacement provided the LCD characters are good.

Regards
Rob

I replaced my display with a standard led backlighted dotmatrix display...it
seems that they are all pincompatibe...only bad thing...the original vintage
optic suffers a bit from a very bright from all angels readable display ;-).
when you are not into 100 % vintage these modern led backlighted displays
are better because they dont indroduce these highfreq hiss to the system as
the old el foils do.
