2 steps forward , 1 back. Vintage mac with SD

2 steps forward , 1 back. Vintage mac with SD

2008-05-07 by mrjdevries

Ok, I FINALLY got a VGA monitor to work with my Mac IIsi, and powered
it up etc.
I stuck in the SD disk from Emu-archives, but i'm pretty sure the
disk drive is in not so great condition.. As it does not read it
properly.
I verified this by formatting another disk, to which, after the
format it comes up with the error "This disk is Locked"
(No, it's not the write protect tab, with that engaged it will not
even try to format)

Sooooooo....

I'm thinking of getting a SCUZZI CD drive (Well, I need one for the
emu CD banks) and getting the SD software burnt to CD.
This should work eh?

Just out of interest, is the SD software already on the CD supplied
by Emu-archives? (If so, this would save me a step or two)

Regards

Mike

The SD app is not on the CDROM you get from Emulator Archive.

It will be supplied on floppies though.

(I have the CD & floppy Disk from emulator archive, but my drive does
not read the floppy)

Will I be able to burn the SD app file to CD from my PC and be able
to read it from my old Mac? (With a SCUZZY CD drive?)
Or am I going to need to borrow someones newer mac to burn the SD app
to CD etc..

Regards

Mike

Have you tried cleaning the floppy drive with compressed air and/or a
head cleaning disk? ie: http://tinyurl.com/6qf5yj

If careful cleaning doesnt help, Id look into a replacement floppy
drive (either internal or external SCSI).

Yes, there are ways to put the files you need on CD-Rom (ie: find
someone who has a Mac with a SCSI CD burner, or load a PC reading
extension: http://www.tempel.org/joliet/), but ultimately you will
still *need* a working floppy drive if you value a hassle free legacy
Mac experience.

I'm about to take out the drive & clean it etc..

If that does not work, and I burn it to a CD which the old mac can read (With a SCSI cd drive)
Will i be able to instal SD or does it 'need' a floppy to run every time?

Ok,

The drive had a missing piece of plastic that held down the top head... so.... I gently pushed it down with a pencil while I copied the SD software across to the HD.. success.. at least it's on my drive now.

  Onwards...

Congratulations!

Once SD is on your harddisk, you don't need its floppy any longer for
SD use.

I think you should be able to choose whether to use the modem or
printer port in SD.

I use both ports, one for the EII connection, the other for a midi
interface to "talk" to my SP-12 (librarian) and my EIII (remote).

Greetz,
Elm.
