emu emulator II + from ebay DOA--help!

2008-02-26 by lawjcrg

hello. I bought a used emulator II+ from ebay. The seller represented
that it worked fine but that the disc drives didn't work. It arrived
today. After turning it on, the lights all flash, and then the only
thing on is the LED display which reads "emulator II boot in process"
and then just stays displaying that. No sounds come out. Any idea
what the problem could be? Is this something fixable? I will take it
to my vintage synth shop to check it out. As an aside, they had
another customer some time back who brought in an emulator II for
repairs. It turned out that it needed a new main board and since they
couldn't get that part, couldn't finish the repair. Just assuming my
synth needed a main board also, does anyone here know of a source where
I could buy such a part?

Thanks in advance for any help. I really wanted this great synth and
hope it can be fixed.

I think it’s the disk drives that doesn’t work.

There are no sounds in an Emulator when you first turn it on and you have to
load a floppy containing the Operating System and some samples in order to
hear anything (or sample something yourself after the OS load).

So I guess you have to start out by getting a replacement 5.25” floppy drive
or the 3.5” floppy drive from Route66 Studios.

It’s perfectly normal that it reads ‘Emulator II boot in progress’ when you
turn it on, but it is waiting for a floppy.

By the way; you could try to clean the old drives. Sometimes it’s enough to
blow some air into them J.

Make sure you have a floppy containing at least the operating system too.

Is there a way to find replacement 5.25" drives that work? If not, and I use the route 66 studios 3.5" replacement discs, how do i get the data from the 5.25" discs that came with this into the synth? Does route 66 studios sell os systems discs on the 3.5" format as well? Sorry for all the basic questions. I'm just learning about all this.

Hi J.C. We all learned at one point so feel free to ask any basic questions
you’ll like J

The thing is – if you buy a 3.5” floppy from Route 66 you have to get a 3.5”
floppy containing the OS too. They provide that as well.

I think most of the list members use their EII in combination with an old
Mac running MacOS7 and Sound Designer for EII.

This way you get access to a LOT of sample banks and you don’t need to have
hundreds of floppies containing samples.

You DO need a working floppy and an OS disk in order to get the Emulator to
work with the Mac though J

All floppies formatted with the Emulator II contains the OS – so I guess

thanks. ok sorry for some basic questions (i have working knowledge of computers but computers and keyboards I'm a bit behind on all this):

  1. what year/model mac or we talking about that uses mac os7?

This DEFINITELY sounds like the way to do. I can't imagine having to deal with hundreds of 5.25" discs lying around!

Regarding the Mac it is a little weird ’cause some have issues with specific
models – and some don’t.

You will always make it work if you use a Mac Classic running MacOS 7.0.1.

Sound Designer is an old DigiDesign program and if I do remember correctly
it’s downloadable in the Files section.

Read all about it here (and also some compatibility info):

http://www.emulatorarchive.com/Archives/Samplers/E2Overview/E2SD/e2sd.html

I can only recommend purchasing the ‘Gold Special Edition’ (including sample
banks, the Sound Designer software and the needed RS422 interface cable)
from Rob – it’s worth every cent – and then some.

Hi,

do you have a second floppy drive in your EII?
If so just try booting off the second one.
You said you have 2 disks. Just put both of them in the drives.
If this does work for one of the floppy drives the other one might be
dead. Then you can try cleaning the floppy.

Good luck!

Re: [emulatorII-list] emu emulator II + from ebay DOA--help!

Hi!

1. concerning your Disk drives:

Disconnect the unit's power chord, open the unit. Ground yourself by
touching a radiator (for example). Then take some Isopropyl alcohol
and clean the power connections between the Power supply unit and the
different boards and drives (plug them off, clean them, plug them back
in). I had similar Problems, and this worked really fine with my EII.

2. concerning Mac connection:

The Emulators serial Interface has to be RS422, not RS232. You have an
EII+, which should already have the newer RS422. - So this should work
fine.

Greetings,
Elm.
