problem with sit files

problem with sit files

2008-02-24 by Hans Nijhof

Hello all.
I've got my EII+HD and my Mac Classic (OS7.1) connected. I can read
samples from the EII and edit them in sounddesigner and sent them back
to the EII. I've got problems with the .sit files that are on the files
section. I downloaded them to my PC. Then used Macdisk to write them on
a Apple formatted floppy. I can copy them to the harddisk of the Mac,
but when I want to open them in Sounddesigner the program doesn't
recognise them. I also tried the Stuffit Expander, but this progam
doesn't recognise the .sit files.

Please give me some hints

Thanks

Hans

SIT files are compressed archives like Zip files on the PC. Sound
Designer cannot do anything with SIT files, the contents must be
uncompressed first with Stuffit Expander.

How are you trying to open your SIT files with Stuffit Expander?

From the group file section:

Using StuffIt Expander

There are several ways to decode a compressed or encoded file with
StuffIt Expander. Try the following:

    * Double-click the icon of the file. On many systems, StuffIt
Expander will launch and decode the file.

    * Using your mouse, click and hold the icon of the file, then drag
it over the icon of StuffIt Expander. When StuffIt Expander's icon
darkens, release the mouse button. StuffIt Expander will open and
decode the file, and then quit.

    * Double-click StuffIt Expander's icon, and wait for it to open.
From the File menu, select Expand, and in the window that appears,
find the file you want to decode. StuffIt Expander will then decode
the file.

    * With StuffIt Expander open, from the Window menu, select Drag
Window. To expand your file, drag it into the Expander window that opens.

Once StuffIt Expander has finished, it usually places the decoded file
in the same folder as the original version. However, if none of the
above options work, your file may be corrupt.

PS: You do not need MacDisk with SIT files. With PC Exchange on your
Mac (also in the group files) your Mac can read DOS formatted floppy
disks.

Hello Hexafuzz,

thanks for responding,

I've found the time to try some things, but without succes.

When I drag the .sit file over the Stuffit Expander file, nothing
happens. The only way I can unpack a file, is start the Stuffit expander
program, then a in the top of the screen File apears and there I can
select files that can be unpacked. Unfortunately the .sit files don't
appear in this screen.

My Macingtosh is 7.0.1 and doesn't respond to the PC exchange program. I
assume that it runs under 7.1. Is there a simple way to update the Mac
without deleting everything?

First, did you install and are you using the version of Stuffit
Expander found in the group files section?

Second, please verify you are dragging and then dropping your .sit
file on the Stuffit Expander desktop *alias* (not on a file).

Yes, you need 7.1 for PC exchange. You may be able to use "Apple File
Exchange" (if you have it) to accomplish the same task under 7.0.1.
http://mac.wikia.com/wiki/Apple_File_Exchange

As far as updating to OS 7.1 or higher, if your system meets the
requirements of the new OS version, you -should- be able to upgrade
without losing anything. However as with anything computer related; if
you have things you cannot afford to lose, you really need to back
them up before making major changes such as an OS upgrade.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, please email me
off-list. This conversation is more about Macs now than the
Emulator-II. ;)
