Hello: I just purchased from ebay an emulator II which needs to have the disc drives replaced. I've seen route66studios on the web and they seem to have the replacement drives. But where can i get copies of the original discs that came with the unit? Also, can I at least replace the old drives with 3 1/2" disc drives? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hello Mr./Mrs. unknown, :-/ at route66 you can get a 3 1/2" disk-drive, but I would say, that they are much to expansive. At our "database"-section you can find some 3 1/5" drives, which are also working with the EII. You can sometimes find EII-sounddisks on ebay, or at www.northstarsamples.com for example. But the best way is, to look for an old Mac (working types are also at the database), the datacable (or build one by yourself) to connect the EII with the mac and download the "Sounddesigner for Emulator II"-software. Then you can download the sounds from the "files"-section and have a look for Emulator II Sounds in Sounddesigner-format. The mac with the software is also the best way to save and load sounds. But you need one working disk for booting the Emulator. And last but not least have a look at here: http://www.emulatorarchive.com/Samplers/E2Overview/e2overview.html There you can find the most informations about the EII. And at this forum for sure. :-) Much luck and best regards Heiko (from germany) --- In emulatorII-list@yahoogroups.com, "lawjcrg" <lawjcrg@...> wrote: > > Hello: I just purchased from ebay an emulator II which needs to have > the disc drives replaced. Hello again Mrs./Mr. unknown, what`s the problem with the drives? Sometimes it will help to clean it from dust, for example with an air- compressor. Some other problems with these old machines are contact- problems with the cables. Sometimes it helps, if you disconnect and reconnect them again. Just try it. But be carefull. Good luck and regards Heiko --- In emulatorII-list@yahoogroups.com, "lawjcrg" <lawjcrg@...> wrote: > > Hello: I just purchased from ebay an emulator II which needs to have > the disc drives replaced. See if you can get your original drives running by cleaning/reseating the cables/connectors (power and data) and also blowing out dust with compressed air. If no-go, go with your original plan of contacting Richard at Route66. Richard is a moderator of this group and its nice when we can support our own. i just bought it off of ebay so haven't even received it yet. I'll take it to my synth repair shop to c if we can salvage the drives.
I appreciate the reference to the archives but I never seem to have luck searching for archived answers and was hoping if someone just happened to know the answer to my question (where to get original emulator II discs) it would save me some time and I would be very grateful. Thanks.

thanks Heiko for the very helpful reply.
Are you suggesting an older mac because it will work with the Emu II to mac seriel cable that I see advertised? I have so much to learn about all this stuff; please bear with my questions. Thanks!

Hello Heiko! i really think you are wrong on the cost of those disc-drives. i am not associated with route66 and i never bought anything there, but let me say the following: i do not think this richard guy will get rich by selling drives for the E2 - and all of us here should be thankful that there are still some guys out there who actually put in the time and research information - finding components to make these old samplers work - even today! also to mention rob @ emulatorarchive where would we be without rob? the information and knowlege that is provided to us is the only thing that keeps these emu´s running - so i am happy to pay 75$ or what ever he wants for a replacement drive :-) big props to you guys! si ----- Original Message ----- From: Heiko Mehring To: emulatorII-list@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 9:00 PM Subject: [emulatorII-list] Re: drives and discs for emulator II Hello Mr./Mrs. unknown, :-/ at route66 you can get a 3 1/2" disk-drive, but I would say, that they are much to expansive. Hello Fnord, I think, that you are basically right. And for some users it will be the best way to buy this diskdrive from route66. But some guys didn`t have the money or/and are technically trained to find a much cheaper way. With a little bit of luck you can find a working drive and the adapter for a few bucks. For this reason I have created the table in the database-section. Momentarily I didn`t need a new drive for my EII. But I have looked forward, because sometimes the time will come, where I need a new one, so I have looked for it. And for the same amount of money, you have to pay at route 66, you can get a working Oberheim DPX1. This little machine has an 5 1/4" and an 3 1/2" diskdrive, which both are also working with the EII. So I just want to say, that route66 is not the only way to get a working disk-drive. It`s a good way, but by far not the cheapest. And there is no question: It is very important for all of us EII- users, to have these guys from emulatorarchive and route66 and all the others who are helping to keep the EII alive. Best Regards Heiko And in thiwhich--- In emulatorII-list@yahoogroups.com, "Fnord" <simonabsent@...> wrote: > > > > Hello Heiko! > > i really think you are wrong on the cost of those disc-drives. i am not associated with route66 and i never bought anything there, but let me say the following: > > i do not think this richard guy will get rich by selling drives for the E2 - and all of us here should be thankful that there are still some guys out there who actually put in the time and research information - finding components to make these old samplers work - even today! > > also to mention rob @ emulatorarchive > > where would we be without rob? > > the information and knowlege that is provided to us is the only thing that keeps these emu´s running - so i am happy to pay 75$ or what ever he wants for a replacement drive :-) > > big props to you guys! > > si > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Heiko Mehring > To: emulatorII-list@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 9:00 PM > Subject: [emulatorII-list] Re: drives and discs for emulator II > > > Hello Mr./Mrs. unknown, :-/ > > at route66 you can get a 3 1/2" disk-drive, but I would say, that they > are much to expansive.
