I guess I am – even though I haven’t received it yet – but I hopefully will
soon.

Glad I'm not the only one. Do you have the 8 or 4
Voice model? I just got a 4 voice and some of the
cables are unplugged from the mother board and I'm not
sure where they go. I was hoping someone could snap a
few pics of the connections. There is a pic on the
Emulator archive site of a 8 voice, but it has a
different connections.

Interesting...have you all some of the original presets? Ever thought of making a backup of the original sounds simply recording the base samples on common digital audio format? I would be glad if I can listen to some orignal presets like Tympanis and percussions in general...
Thx for any support..

Re: Any Emulator I users in this group?

2008-02-12 by elmbeatz

I bought mine in '91 without any disks.
Back in those days, E-Mu still was a company on their own feet, and
they gave me support, as they sent me all software that originally
came with the machine ( formatting, multisampling, sequencing,
manual.... ).
The thing worked as I tested it, but it worked very very buggy. It's
an eight voice model. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost all my disks
for it...

Anyway, I just got it because I'm a vintage E-Mu fanatic...

Greetings,
Elm.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: Any Emulator I users in this group?

Elm,

I had a similar type of encounter back in the early
90s, I bought this E1 from a group called Voice Farm,
it came with all their samples:). It stopped working
one day so I drove it up to EMu systems to no far from
where I live. They put me in contact with Ed R. one of
the original designers and they fixed it no charge!
Long story short, I sold that E1 a few years later,
always regretted it.

I just now got a 4 voice, with the disk drive
removed. I found a replacement drive but lack two
things:

1. The drive mounting bracket. I will have to make my
own and was hoping someone with a E1 could just send
me a pic of how its mounted that would help me.

2. The replacement drive has some jumpers on it and I
was hoping someone with a working E1 could let me know
what jumper settings they have on their drive.

If I get mine working I could send you a few disks if
you still want them?

Thanks
G

I saw that one on ebay, too :)

Btw.:

My EI's casing ser.-No. is 001B (B for eight voice I guess). It's a
little strange, because it has many upgrades though..
So it cannot be the true 001, because it's got sequencer and a rev 3
(?) board in it. Nevertheless, maybe stevie had let it upgraded and
later sold it?! ;)

Greetings,
Elm.

Ha ha ..

Man – If that should be true you’d get a million USD for it on eBay J

How funny, I've just stuck a refurbished Shugart 400L in my Emulator1.. so I went through the whole jumpers thing.. (I stuck the jumpers off my old drive into the old one.)

This drive cost me $10 and worked perfectly!

Looking at the drive front on, from the disk entry side..

The IC mount with the jumpers is wired as follows

Hi G!

Take a look in the photos section.
I found a picture of my Drive mounting and posted it there. As well as
a picture of my serial plate.

Greetings,
Elm.

RE: [emulatorII-list] Re: Any Emulator I users in this group?

Hi
Most of the original 25 Emulators from 1981 (no sequencer, no VCA envelope)
were upgraded to the "Mark II". Certainly they all have envelopes as Dave
Rossum went round every user and replaced the boards.
Its very rare to see an Emulator I without sequencer but I did own one. I
would have thought Stevies/001B would have had all the upgrades possible,
except the JLC GenMod.

Beware early Emulators with the old OS EPROM, they struggle to be upward
compatible with OS diskette and sample libraries.

Mike,

Yea, its a small world when it comes to Shugart disk
jumpering:)

If this E1 decides to be too much of a basket case I
might preform an act of blasphemy. I was thinking of
gutting it out and putting a EIII XP in there with a 4
octave MIDI controller and hooking up a few of the
panel buttons, and maybe putting the display in the
floppy holder or something like that. I remember Ed
R. telling me that some guy used to have a gutted out
E1 that had been converted into a hibachi. I won't go
that route.

Thanks for the info.

Think you got the better deal, 8V no missing parts.

Ha ha, cool, I've had a similar idea...
I still got a raw EII casing (actually played once in Hamburg by Alan
Wilder), in which I wanted to put a usb midi controller some time
ago.. same Idea with floppy opening -> display..

Has anybody of you guys did such things before?

greetings,
Elm

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: Any Emulator I users in this group?

Elm,

Still trying to get this E1 to boot. I added a few
pics of the jumpers on the two drives that I am trying
to get to work. Both are 400L models, not sure if
there is a SA-400L? think the SA just stands for
Shugart Associates and isn't a different model. The
jumper block on your drive is all the way to the end
of the circuit board on mine its one IC in. At this
point there are a few things that might be bad as
well. The Boot PROM might be bad, the Z-80 SIO/2 might
be bad, and it might just be a set of bad floppies.

Had a couple of questions if you don't mind? If you
put an unformatted floppy in the drive, how does the
E1 react? Is the red LED on the drive supposed to come
on? It never does on mine, all you hear is the disk
spinning.

All the LEDs on the E1 stay lit except for the
Sample/overload and sometimes the swap turns off. Is
that an indicator of anything?

Thanks
G

Mike,

Still trying to get this E1 working:). I attached a
pic of what I understood should be the correct disk
drive jumper settings. Is this the same as what you
have? Now the LED comes on and if the drive is empty
it makes a noise like its doing a disk seek.
Unfortunately once I put a disk in the drive nothing
happens, all the LEDs stay lit thats about it. All the
disks that I have/bought are from a 8Voice model. I
bet I need a set of disks specific to the 4Voice.

What’s the ROM version of your Emulator ?

You can see it on the EPROM chip located on the top right side of the
sampler.

The ROM version will look something similar to this 810928.

If it’s an old ROM version it may be unable to read any samples made on
another Emulator – it sounds to me as if this is your problem.

I have the old 810928 version and cannot read floppies made on another
Emulator – but fortunately mine came with 369 floppies.

But let me know what version it is – and I’ll let you know if this is your
problem.

Hmm .. It's newer than mine then (the first two digits (82 and 81) is the
year.).

Have you tried with floppies from another Emulator ?
Where in the world are you located ?
