MacDisk...

MacDisk...

2008-02-07 by Martin Dubka

This is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare for me.
I have managed to get my hands on an old pc with a floppy drive and I've downloaded and
installed Macdisk.
I think I understand the suggested way of copying single E2 files to a floppy disk for use with
SD. BUT does anyone know how to write the correct files to install a software update or
driver onto my mac classic II?
This page:
http://www.pure-mac.com/appud.html
seems to contain everything I need but I still can't figure it out.
I'm totally lost in this regard and, seemingly, nobody can help me...
Cheers in advance,
Martin

I also tried to make an *.EII bank with EMXP and copied it via MacDisk
on a mac formatted zip disk. It wasn't recognized by Sound designer as
a valid bank...
To me, this exchange ting is really hell, too.

This is REALLY easy to fix.

You need to set up the signature file correctly in MacDisk in order to make
it work.

Can’t remember who wrote the solution to it but here it is – it sure helped
me a lot:

If you use MacDisk, make sure the filetype properties are set correctly
before using it with EII files. You should use the Options->Signature Editor
in MacDisk, in order to make sure that- Mac Files with filetype E2BK and
creator XFER are translated to MS DOS extension .EII- Windows files with
extension .EII are translated to filetype E2BK and creator XFER.

Don't forget to save the signature file !

I already did this and I still can't get SDII to recognize the file...

Options > Signature Editor > Add Item > EII - E2BK - XFER > Save
Then back to main page > PC to Mac > added a .EII file from my documents and eventually
it comes up in the main window with the signature TEXT???? > eject disk.
And obviously doesn't work when I try to open it with SD in my mac classic.
What am I doing wrong?
Oh, and I checked the mac option in the format disk section.
Somebody please help!
I'm spending far too much money on this for it not to work...
Martin

Hi Martin.

That’s really weird – but you probably already knew that.

I have a system VERY similar to yours (A Windows XP SP2 machine with MacDisk
and an old Macintosh Classic with SD on it) anmd I have it working like a
charm.

I have uploaded my signature file – overwrite your signature file with this
one to try and see if something’s wrong with yours. All I did was to add the
EII in the file – nothing else. (put it in the LH_Duhem folder in your
Programs folder and overwrite your existing one.)

It’s here:

http://12bit.com/files/macsigef.zip (Unzip it)

You probably already know this too, but insert a floppy in your PC’s drive,
format it using MacDisk (or format it on the Classic – same thing), drag and
drop a EII file into the main window on MacDisk and wait until it’s finished
copying it onto the floppy.

Then put it in your Classic and have SD transfer it to your EII.

If maybe you think there’s something wrong with your EII files I have
uploaded a test SD EII file with some strings on it here:

http://12bit.com/files/EIItest.EII

Let me know if it works out.

Hey Kenneth, Martin!
As I do have the same problems, I'll check it out too.
I have a Mac SE, System 6 somewhat. what systems do you run?

Has anybody tried out the filetyper tool in the files section? (system
7+ only!) Maybe that could help too (didn't quite get what exactly
it's for)..?

Thank you! That's very kind! :-)
BUT I'd have to say it "kind of" worked...
Sure enough, it appeared in the main window with the correct Signature after using your file.
And I wrote a disk with the EIItest.EII file you were kind enough to send me.
I copied it to my Mac Classic II HD and loaded up SD.
Then when I click "Mac>E2" and browse my files, I can't see EIItest.EII but I can see a couple
of files I downloaded from my E2 just to test the connection.
And why is it that my other files don't have the extension.EII?
What on earth am I doing wrong?!
Maybe something in the preferences or the type of disk I'm using?
I just don't understand...
Could someone please list their working configuration and process, piece by piece?
At this point, even the tiniest, seemingly obvious detail could be my problem.
Thanks again,
Martin

I've got EXACTLY the same problem. :(

The Banks that work have a 'document' attribute, those which do not
work are listed as 'simple text documents' - though they are
interpreted CORRECT by EMXP after putting them into the EMXP/Images
folder and adding the *.EII extension.

Eurika!!!!

I didn't realise you had to switch from waveform display to front panel! :-P

I was trying to load a bank as if it were a voice. Idiot...

Nice solina patch by the way! Cheers!

> The Banks that do not
> work are listed as 'simple text documents'

This is most likely because of a missing resource fork. When a Mac
file is copied to the PC, the resource fork, type and creator
information are lost.

Lost forks can be avoided by first encoding your files on the
Macintosh with DropStuff (in the file section) into SIT format which
saves the Mac specific data with the file. As long as the file is kept
in SIT format on the PC, the file can exist on a single fork machine
(PC, UNIX) or be telecommunicated and decoded at the other end with
all Mac information intact.

Obviously keeping files in SIT format does not work if you need to use
a PC program like EMXP. This is where FileTyper (in the group files
section) comes in. Running FileTyper on your Mac, you can fix banks
with orphaned resource forks. I just posted a screenshot to the Sound
Designer folder in the group photos section with the correct settings
to use in FileTyper to restore your missing fork SD banks.

Using the FileTyper solution, if your Mac can read PC formatted
floppies (using PC Exchange or DOS Mounter), you do NOT have to use
MacDisk at all.

PS: There is another program called ResEdit that will accomplish the
same thing as FileTyper, but ResEdit will only fix one bank at a time,
where FileTyper can do entire folders at once.

Credit for this great solution goes to list member Wayne Griffin.

Thanks!
Unfortunately I'm running mac os 6.7 or so...
Filetyper needs 7.x

I've got system 7 on floppys, but they're HD disks.. my mac SE can
only read DD disks

Shit happens...

In that case, maybe you can try ResEdit.
