Buggy Filters with Audio Example - Any Diagnosis?

Buggy Filters with Audio Example - Any Diagnosis?

2008-01-31 by elmbeatz

Hi freaks!

From time to time, my EII's filters seem to misbehave in a very bad
way (kind of distorted / decalibrated?!).
If you want to hear what I mean, please go to the

Files Section / Sound Bytes / Elms Buggy Filters.
(second from above)

I play eight single notes, only the first seems to get played back
correctly (in cycles - the 'ninth' is played back correctly again and
so on). Then chords with three, six and eight voices in polyphony. It
seems that when the ONE correct voice is played, all other voices get
played back correctly, too (strange..).
This bug can be corrected by either hitting the EII hard on its
downside, or opening it up and pushing on its chips. Both are not
really nice ways to 'repair' it ;(

Does anybody have a "diagnosis" ?
Greetings,
Elm.

Immediately cease inducing physical shock and/or
deflection to your EII motherboard.

It's time to delicately (as in mind the ESD) reseat
every single chip in your machine. Mind all the
removable connectors too while at it. It's a fact of
life when you own something from this period- Prophet,
Oberheim, Lexicon alike. Nothing beats a small flat
jeweler's screwdriver and some patience. Stay
grounded, it's winter in this good hemisphere. [w]

Stop beating up that sampler – or I’ll come and beat you up J.

It’s a delicate machine !

I KNOW!

That's why I'm crying for help !!

Should I clean the contacts of the chips / sockets somehow with
somewhat, or should I just plug them out and in again?
I need a special caliper tool for that, don't I ?

And: Should all the I/O jacks be cleaned somehow, too?
(If I do all this effort, I'm willing to do it properly an GOOD).
BECAUSE I LOVE THIS MACHINE!

Thanks for your replies and greetings again,
ELM!

Buggy Filters .... SUCCESS - Thanx WAYNE GRIFFIN !!!!!!!!!

Hi Wayne!
Thank you so much. I did what you said - took out each and every IC of
my EII, cleaned it and its socket with alcohol, put it back in
(connectors too of course).

It was a complete success. The thing sounds just heavenly. The Filter
is nice, smoof and precise. It's exactly doing what it's supposed to do.

No more slapping needed now it's aight.
I would recommed this to everybody who's got problems with his EII, no
matter what. It's a hell of a lot of work (I think all together appx.
15 hours or so, but it was worth it. I'm completely overwhelmed.

Thanks again and greetings,
Elm.

Cool, mate. I know well how much effort these things require. Because if you don't bloody well believe me, I can furnish picks of myJuno-60 which is the only Juno-60 in the world with socketed logic on theprogrammer board. I did it by hand. I also did my friend's Jupiter-4, but we are best friends and an hour is but a minute anyway. You have to consider how many thousands of electrical connections these PCB's represent. Emu were kind to us in this regard we just have to make those connections fresh again. [w]
