New Emulator 2 owner. Need help with everything!!!!!!

New Emulator 2 owner. Need help with everything!!!!!!

2008-01-23 by newmanscun

O.K. I'm new to all this so please pardon my ignorance and here goes.
I purchased an Emulator 2 yesterday(single floppy drive) with the
knowledge that the original 5 1/4 floppy drive was probably toast.
(Floppy drive led remains lit when I turn the unit on with no floppy
present, will not load anything even when disc is present ets. etc.
Issues most of you are probably familiar with.) So here go the
questions.

1. Can I find a 5 1/4 floppy drive unit? I am assuming not.
2. If I replace the 5 1/4 drive with a 3.5 drive, can I or how do I
tranfer all of my 5 1/4 floppy performance and library disc to the 3.5
format?(Don't laugh too hard.) Are these 5 1/4 floppys essentially
worthless to me outside of ebay or those of you who still have working
E2s with 5 1/4 drives.
3. Lots of talk on here about programing, editing and tranfer via old
Macs, etc. Keep in mind I have never used and operating system older
than Windows 98 and OSX 10.4 so I need some serious schooling. Help!

Hello from Germany & BEFORE you buy an expensive floppy drive from
Route66 Studios ... you should know something.

1. It´s very hard to find an working 5 1/4 floppy drive unit. But your
EII have two 5 1/4 floppies. The easiest way is to replace the working
drive as the upper drive (notice the jumper settings). For the lower
drive you can use every floppy drive (3,5") that support the jumper
settings ID0 /ID1 ... for example the drives SMD-300/340 or 380 works
in my EMAX SE (the same drive works in my Emulator II). You doesn´t
need a expensive drive from Route66. The SMD-340 cost about 10 €
(about 7 $) used on ebay.

2. If you´ve use an older MAC (MAC Classic or so) you can store and
replace your sounds to 3,5" floppy drive. The best choice!

3. To working, editing & transfer your sounds with an older MAC
Classic or so is very easy! The only you need is: the serial data
cable (very easy to self-config) & as software the "Sounddesigner for
Emulator II" from Digidesign. Than everything´s fine!

I have seen old drives come back to life after the cables and
connections (power and data) were cleaned (DeoxIT) & reseated, and the
drive was cleaned out using compressed air.

If these suggestions dont work, then you should contact Rich at
Route66 about a 3.5" replacement. Be sure and ask if you can work with
just a single 3.5" though. Most configurations I have seen included
both a 5.25 for booting and a 3.5 for saving/loading banks.

I wouldnt worry about Macs until you have a working E-II. When you do,
use the Mac links in the group links section to get yourself up to speed.

Just wanted to thank you. Cleaning out the drive as you suggested got
the ole dog working. Thanks a million.

By the way:
The method of unplugging and replugging cables applies to many parts
that seem to have failures. Even pushing on its chips can solve
various problems.

Elm.
