EII to DPX translation software

EII to DPX translation software

2007-12-15 by esynthesist

Hi all

I think I succeeded in reverse engineering the DPX disk layout for
Emulator II soundbanks.

In the files section of
    http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/oberheim_dpx1/
you can find a small Windows XP commandline tool called E2DPX.
This software reads SoundDesigner for EII files and translates them to
DPX diskimages. You can write these images to floppy disks using
DPXWRITE (also in that files section).

This tool could be useful for those not having an EmuII anymore to
create EII disks for the DPX.
It's also a quick way to create DPX disks without having to start your
Mac & EmuII to create disks before being able to load them into your
DPX.
PS: you can buy a CD with many EII banks on www.emulatorarchive.com !

I tested this tool with 15 Emu factory and OMI banks... it seems to
work.

Have fun !

I'm very interested in acquiring more factory sounds for my EII. I
do not have the Mac SDII setup or the RS422 board for that matter.
I have a 5.25 floppy in drive one and a 3.5 floppy from route 66 in
drive two. How can I get more sounds for this thing? I would
prefer to have them on 3.5 DD disks, or, if there is a way that I
could buy the CD and then convert them to DD disks? If I could do it
with Windows XP, that would be a grand slam. I'm very open to
creative ideas.

Re: EII to DPX translation software

2007-12-16 by esynthesist

If you don't have a Mac/RS422, the only way to get soundbanks into
the EII is by floppy disk.
And until now, no one succeeded in reading or writing EII disks with
a PC.
(see also message http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/emulatorII-
list/message/1242)

By the way, if I would have a 3.5 drive in my EII, I would probably
be investigating if it's really impossible.
But I don't... my 5.25 drives are in perfect condition and Route66
didn't answer my questions for their drive a year ago.
And my PCs carrying a 5.25 drive are too old to do any software
development experiments on (I'm not going to use those old dos C-
compilers anymore :-)

Some people are trying to get the diskread/write work on a PC, but
until now I haven't heard of any success.

So really: you should buy a 20 dollar Mac Classic and a ?? dollar
RS422 board for your EII (see somewhere else on this group).

Re: EII to DPX translation software

Hi,

I translated an .EII File with the DPXTools Software
into the DPX Image Data.

Size goes up from 475kb to 880kb!

My Floppy Disks only have 720 kb Space.
I also formated them in the DPX.
But DPXWrite come up with an error message, when i
try to copy the translated data.

How do I get the 880b onto a floppy disk,
or am i using the wrong type of disks?

What error do you get from DPXWRITE ?
Did you install the required floppy driver first (fdrawcmd) ?
Are you using an internal floppy drive (non-USB that is...) ?

DPXWrite works after formating with yout DPXFormat Tool.
The Error Message only comes, when i try to PDXWrite on a disk,

ok, writing works so far, but when i put the disk in the

File was copied with the .img ending. Hope the is correct.

Any hints?

Now I'm confused.

Your DPX-1 is OS 1.3 but it can format disks ??

As far as I know the disk write features were only introduced on DPX with version 1.5.
So my first guess would be that your DPX needs a higher OS version. The physical disk structure of the >1.5 DPX native disks is different from the disk structure of the sampler disks supported by the DPX (= Akai, Mirage and Prophet 2000).

Re: EII to DPX translation software

Hi, when i turn on the DPX and step down to advanced
functions the LEDs say "Fd"
Isn't that Format disk?
With pressing Enter it starts the format process.
When its finished and i say again FORMAT DISK,the LED
says "bd" which means Blank disk afaik.

Under advanced functions 3 steps right there comes the
OS Version in the Display and it says "1.3"

But, yes, I really want to upgrade to higher OS.
But how?
Ich have the OS2.2 Files but can't burn eproms.
Route66 have the OS2.2 for 28$, maybe its better
to get it there.

My DPX can't read the disks written with your DPXWrite.
Thats my main problem. Whats the reason?
- Wrong OS?
- Wrong Floppy Disks?
- Floppy Drive damaged? (but it can format disks!)

Re: EII to DPX translation software

Can you do the following test: install the OmniFlop floppy driver and run the OmniFlop program (wizard), put the DPX formatted disk in your PC, start "read" in OmniFlop and make sure that "autodetect" is flagged. OmniFlop will automatically try to find out what kind of disk is in your PC drive.
If the result list of OmniFlop does not mention "Oberheim DPX" then this is clearly not the kind of disk which is supported by DPXTools. If however Oberheim is mentioned by OmniFlop we have to investigate further...

Note that there can always be an alignment problem between the PC drive and the DPX drive. Sometimes I have to 're-read' a disk in my DPX 5 to 10 times before the DPX finally recognizes the disk.

Still it's very strange to me that OS 1.3 allowed to format disks while it didn't support backing up of disks yet. Besides formatting disks, can you actually also write (=backup) disks on your DPX ?
If so, there's clearly an error on some websites out there which explain the differences between DPX OS versions.

Re: EII to DPX translation software

2009-09-21 by christian.schwank

Hi, thanks for your help!

I opened the cassis of the DPX an the 2 Eproms are
labeled with OS 1.3. So this must be definitely OS 1.3

Ok, i formated a disk in the DPX and OmniFlop in Read Modus
shows a list with 3 detected formats.
- Ensoniq SQ80
- Oberheim DPX
- Prophet 2002
The conclusion from that is on you...

I have also tried a couple of times to load from disk into the
DPX and one time the LED shortly shows "E2" but
after that directly to "dE" Disk Error.
So there must be something he could read.

I can't try the backup process, because I don't have any
floppy disks for the DPX. I bought the DPX shortly without disks,
and never successfully loaded and heard any sound from it.
Sad but true :-(
I thought:
"I have the complete OMI Lib, that must be enough and easy to load in"
 :-)
The data dump feature "dd" can be chosen, aswell as "sP" and "Sd"
And after pressing Enter the LED from the 3,5 floppy lights up,
followed by Error, because of no disk.

What are correct disks?
I have Sony MFD-2DD disks (720kb)

Regards
Christian

Re: EII to DPX translation software

Interesting to see that the 1.3 OS is capable of all these features. Perhaps an update of the DPX information on emulatorarchive is necessary now :-)

The fact that OmniFlop recognizes the disk as DPX is good news.
Because there may be a workaround now: instead of using DPXREAD and DPXWRITE which are based on the fdrawcmd floppy driver, you can simply try the OmniFlop tool to read and write your DPX disks :-) You may also try the format function of OmniFlop to format DPX disks.

The E2DPX tool of DPXTOOLS creates full DPX disk images from the sound designer files, so these images can directly be used by OmniFlop - you don't *have* to use dpxwrite; any disk write tool is an option.

By the way: the fact that the DPX shortly displayed E2 indicates that there's probably just a small alignment problem.

So I hope OmniFlop will work better for you.

Note: once DPX will natively supported in EMXP, it will also be based on OmniFlop instead of fdrawcmd (or a choice between them).

Good luck

Re: EII to DPX translation software

2012-12-20 by stuntman444

Hello!

I will revive this thread because I have exactly the same problem described here.

The only difference is that I my newly purchased DPX has OS 2.2.

About functions of the DPX:

- I can format diskettes and save RAM content onto them
- I can load diskettes in Prophet 2000, Mirage and EII format

About functions of my PC:

- I can run DPXTOOLS, I get no error message, all procedures are completed (apparently) successfully but the DPX doesn't read diskettes made with the computer and says nF if I insert in the DPX a diskette I formatted with the PC

- I can successfully format and write EMAX diskettes, my EMAX will load then without problems

In the PC I installed the Fdrawcmd driver and the disk drive is internal (no USB) and it works with EMXP for EMAX.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me sorting out this issue.

Many thanks!

Edo
