Moving the lower Floppy Drive... Advice needed.

Moving the lower Floppy Drive... Advice needed.

2007-12-15 by Martin Dubka

Okay, my upper floppy drive is getting a bit temperamental so my plan is to remove it and
place the lower one in it's place, then fill the lower bay with a route66 3.5" drive.
Would this be possible? Are my two 5.25" drives identical? And how easy is it to carry out
such an operation?

Cheers again,
Martin

There are different jumper settings on the two drives.
You should compare them and replace the ones from the working lower one
by the settings of the defective upper one before switching them.
Also you'll have to remove the terminator resistor pack of the upper
drive drive and plug it into the lower drive before switching the
interface cables.
Typical jumper differences are the DS (drive select), which should be
DS0 or DS1 for the upper drive and DS 1 or DS2 for the lower drive
(numbering starts either with 0 or 1, check the prints on the drive)
Also there might be a difference with the MM/SM jumpers.

Thanks for that mate.
Now, forgive my ignorance but, hot do you change the jumper settings?
And what are MM/SM jumpers?
AND what is the terminator resistor pack?
Is there any documentation around for this procedure?
Thanks again,
Martin

Hey Martin
I did this 10 years ago.

  Try this:
1.Mark your drives with a label.( drive 1 and 2)
2.Then pull both drives out of your EII.
  Now the easy part
  3. USE your eyes. Compare those 2 drives and the jumpers.
  4. I remember there is a IC you have to switch. I´m not sure about that but you will se the difference on the drives. Master/slave.

If you dont have luck and any help, i can remove the top of my EII and take some pictures for you.
