Display question

2002-01-05 by Laurence Shields

Hi Rob and everyone. I know this has probably been covered somewhere before,
but can anyone tell me what my options are in replacing the display on my
EII? I can read it ok, but the backlight's gone bye-bye.

Thanks for any advice. :-)

Hi,
The LCD backlight fails or rather fades to grey and nothing !!

This is an easy repair for a service centre and it can be done at home with
care and knowledge of electronic servicing. You'll need a new LCD, the
Optrex DMC16207N-EB which is pretty much an exact replacement for the EII
LCD. The only difference is that the new LCD is dark blue letters on blue
backlight and not black letters on blue blacklight. Anyway the original is
obsolete and E-mu have run out of these spares last time we called them.

Expect to pay 25 US Dollars for the LCD. Digikey don't have any in stock but
other US based electronics may have them. If you get stuck we can sell you
one for around the same amount plus shipping. This beats E-mu price of $125
+.

The only things to watch for are:

1) Don't touch the EII casing with a soldering iron - it melts !
2) Protect the face of the new LCD until its ready for FINAL assembly - this
ensures no solder splashes on it
3) The 14 way cable between the LCD and front panel board usually looks a
mess after the old LCD is desoldered - so its best to replace this with a
new one. They are special cables and they cost around 10 US Dollars. We can
supply them.

You might need to replace the inverter as well. But I havent seen one go in
all our repairs yet. Once again we have them.

There is more deatil on the web site at ..

This replacement is well worth doing. Its cheap (even for a repair centre)
to do, and it restores alot of the original feel to the EII. Whilst the
front panels are out of the EII its worth replacing any worn buttons and
pots. One of our EII's sounds much better with a new master volume pot.

And finally for others considering a new LCD. Get it done this year before
the parts are obsoleted !!

Regards
Rob

PS EII Diagnostics Manual is on the web site for download. Helps when the
thing won't boot.
