Hello group! I'm a new and proud owner to a EII+HD, but I have a question about the sample rate used by EII: is it hardcoded to sample at 27.777kHz 'only' or is it possible to change that in "software" (OS/EPROM comes to my mind)? Another question as I'm going: Is it possible to re-assign voices to another of the eight separate outputs in real-time? to create some sort of stereo effect? Thanks in advance

Hi It is hard coded....in firmwave not in the OS. There is no real time assignment of voice channels..... However it is remarkable how much software is in the E2, such as cross fade looping. Hi
Thanks for the answer! I still think it's an amazing sampler! I just wanted to know if it was possible to create some sort of stero effect... Interesting to know about the crossfade looping. Btw, I like your website! I've got most of my info about the E-mu samplers/synthesizers from there, and thats where I found interest in the instruments, a real source of knowledge! I own both the EII+HD, and an EIII rack sampler with 8Mb. Thanks to your website.
Another thing I want to mention is that I replaced the SCSI harddrive in my EIII with a 1Gb Compact Flash card. I did it by using a SCSI to IDE-bridge adapter from www.acard.com . So now it' very quiet - I can only hear the two fans at the rear end, and I don't have to worry about the SCSI unit to end it for good. There's an afterlife for old vintage samplers with SCSI!
Regards,
Marko

Hi I tried using a ZIP100 on the EII SCSI connection but no luck. Its a very early SCSI implementation that drives an Adaptec interface and the EII hard drive is not actually SCSI at all.. Its all done in Z80 assembler and its hard coded to format just 20MB and only the Miniscribe hard drive. The EII came out just as SCSI became available. Old and SD or EII is the best option. Hi Marko
I was very excited reading about your flash card solution for your EIIIr. Could you give me details regarding the SCSI to IDE-bridge and also the type of flashcard (and a link)?
Does your EIIIr load faster using the flash card? Are there any difference using the flash card instead of the old harddrive?
Thanks in advance for responding.
Best regards
Brian

I forgot to answer how it works with the Flashcard and the EIIIr...
Well, it took a little more than an hour to format the whole 1Gb memory, and as far as I have read, that's what you can expect from an ordinary SCSI hdd of that memory size. When I boot up it search the SCSI chain twice (including the floppy drive) before it finds the OS and load it. I think it's not a real problem I think I can live with that =) . The interface responds as usual without any delay, I'll guess it's working a little bit smoother than before actually! But one of the most benefits of the change is that it's sooo quiet than before! you won't hear that high frequency noise from old SCSI hdd. And you don't need to worry about any mechanical parts of the storage system to breakdown. The only thing I hear now are the two cooling fans at rear end of the rack. It cost me about 120.00 the whole thing including shipping fee. So if you're serious about keeping your "old" equippment 'alive and kicking' it's absolutely worth it.
Btw, you don't need any drivers for the adapter cards since the SCSI-to-IDE adapter have a microcontroller built in taking care of it, and also a flash memory if one need to upgrade the firmware of the adapter card.
Regards,
Marko

Great info Marko! I plan on trying this out soon myself. Thanks for keeping our love for these classics machines alive.

Thanks for your many advices. @ Marko: Thanks, but the symptom isn´t right. The drives don´t click. It´s the problem that there aren't any service centers in Germany or the two service centers for E-MU have refused the acceptance. It was said - as a reason - that the EII is too old.:-( @ Mike: Thanks, I also think that could matter the power supply. I´m not an electrician, however, repair PCs from time to time. What I have noticed still, when switching on slowly the EII I hear such a electric break with crackling of the power supply. Hope that you know, what I mean @ Rob: Thanks, but how I can check the 5 V rails? Could a normal electronics technician also repair this? The only what I have done till now was the advices from "esynthesist". Thanks for all your advices! Greetz Dan

Ok, here's a link to a website that 'might' help you:
http://dvdborn.blogspot.com/search/label/Emulator%20III
There you can find an e-mail link to a guy called 'Dr.C' that's supposed to be an experienced technician when it comes to e-mu's samplers - but don't take my word for it =) It's not the guy who runs the website but you can find a link to him or maybe ask the owner of the website.
