White EL foil ( LCD backlight )

White EL foil ( LCD backlight )

2007-05-16 by ][

In an attempt to be different, I tried to use White EL foil for the
new backlight in my SP-12 (std Optrex part) and absolutely nothing
happened.
I took the stuff outside and plugged into a different inverter and
connected to the cigarette on my car and it glowed a brilliant white
so I know the problem had to be something with the E-mu inverter. I
don't think the E-mu part is failed. I don't know why the white colour
wouldn't work as opposed to the blue, I just thought I would let
everyone know not to try this. [w]

Re: I bet I know this one. After you unsolder and remove old foil
it is necessary to insulate or cover the tabs that old foil
connected to, use a thin strip of electrical tape. Slide new foil
in and solder inverter leads directly to new foil. I tried the
white but the blue is easier to read for these aging eyes. Let me
know if that works, Doug

Thanks for chiming in but I'm not sure I follow you.
Are you saying that you got the white to work? Are
there any pictures of what you're describing? [w]

>RE: Hi Wayne, Simply put, the color of foil is insignificant
here as this in theory is merely an electrical component. I had the
same problem with the last Korg 01 as well as my EII. On the Korg,
it is impossible to remove old foil so you slide new one in on top
of it. When you unsolder the two contacts where the old foil was
connected and remove old foil from display, try to get as much
solder off display contacts as possible with minimuim exposure to
heat. Then cover those two contacts on display with electrical
tape. Slide new foil in place and take the wire from inverter and
solder directly on to the contacts of new foil. That is, the
inverter must connect to new foil and nothing else. Again I used
thin piece of electrical tape to cover the area where new contacts
joined foil. Your inverter should be putting out around 100v with
no load. Just remember to limit your time solder gun is exposed to
display board and foil, no more than 2 seconds as heat travels
quickly and you could fry your display as well as ruining foil.
Cooltronix recommends laminating display. I used clear package tape
on both sides and worked fine. Key here is new foil must be
insulated from display board in order to work properly, look at
your old foil that you removed.
I am sure the person with the problem would try this their display
would work properly, given the inverter is working. Doug

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me in detail. I
guess my inverter must not be working. I constructed
and connected my EL exactly the way that you described
(laminated / directly connected) I suppose my inverter
is dying. I wasn't aware that you could test inv's
with no load, I thought it was bad for them- no? [w]

you will have to improvise wiring as it will not fit into pc board
taps. Just silicon seal to board where old one was and run wires
from board to new inverter. Check your schematics for inverter in
voltage. Doug

Just wanted to follow up about the White EL foil.

I did, in fact, have a faulty inverter. I had another
one laying around and now and the glow is great,
although it looks quite blue when connected to the
stock E-mu inverter. Reads 89V AC, don't have a scope
so not sure about frequency. cheers, [w]

Very good! Blue is normal for EII display, polarized glass covering display, etc.
Voltage is acceptable, not a hi-tech component, if display were to hum at different
frequencies and display light "bursts" would be too high voltage, if light were to
oscillate from almost normal viewing to somewhat dimmer, too low current. In other words
if it lights, its working, dont mess with what aint broke. Cheers! Doug PS If you look
at my pic in PHOTOS with new backlight, you can see one switch missing, the STOP switch,
got a few from DigiKey, just haven't been motivated yet. Yeah Yeah, could have done it
when I did backlight, just had too much else to do.
