boot problems

boot problems

2007-05-04 by mikehilario77

Hello all, I have owned my emulator for some time now.
I recently decided to install a 3.5 lower drive. I dont remember
exactly where I went wrong, but at some point long ago I was unable to
get my original 5.2 drive to boot consistantly. Recently I havent been
able to get it to work(load diskette)keeps coming up. So I thought I
would istall the second drive, and boot from there. Problem is I do
not own a 3.5 os disc. My thinking was that I could download it from
an emulator web site. Is there such a place that I could go to for the
OS. Im not exactly sure that that would solve my problem, being that
the disc has to be formatted in the E2, correct ??
Well anyhow, Id like to begin trouble shooting anyway I can. It could
be the Os Disc. It is a version OS 3.1( 5.2)and was made copied about
5 years ago. Is it commen that these discs go bad ? The motor on the
5.2 drive seems to be running, my connections are correct. Im not sure
if I need to change my jumper settings ?? I dont remember playing with
them at all?? So as you can see I am very fresh with all this stuff,
so many of questions have arised. ASny help wouls be appriciated.
My ultimate goal is to get both drives going so that I can copy all of
my sound discs. My emulator came with 2 drives, I tried replacing them
awile ago, and ended up tossing the original drive. What the heck was
I thinking ?? Well the set up never worked.. So that is where I am at
the moment.

Thanks for reading..best

Well it's definitely not possible to download the OS and save it to
disk. As you said, the disk has to be formatted by the EII - and once
formatted it can not be read/written by any PC/Mac anymore...

Now I also had one drive (5.25) of which the motor was running but no
read/write/boot activity was possible at all.
The guy who sold the EII to me solved the problem by cleaning the
diskheads with a cleaner disk + clean fluid once a month (!)

I was also going to do that, but the problem was solved in another
rather exceptional way: when I was opening the Emulator II, the
sampler suddenly fell from the chair on the floor. Of course I was in
panic and I thought that the whole EmuII would be dead. However the
opposite was true ! Some bad buttons suddenly worked fine again, and -
more importantly - the drive was 100% OK again !

Of course I perfectly understand that you will not throw your EII on
the floor in order to "repair" your drive... But the story may prove
that the problem could be caused by some minor mechanical thing
inside your drive.

Thanks, I'll try the cleaner. But I would agree that this is a very sensitive unit. It is possible that from my last couple of moves, that the drive has been disrupted somehow.
Thanks for your response, any experience helps. Cant wait to wake her up out of this hibernation...much appriciated advice, hopefully it's nothing serious, and just a kink.

  Peace
