Subject: [emulatorII-list] Emulator II supported by EMXP v2.03

  Hi all

I finally managed to add some Emulator II support to the free EMXP
  software.

Currently only some basic functions are available.
The most important and interesting ones are:
  - conversion of samples from any Emulator II bankfile (*) to WAV
  - conversion of WAV files to a new Emulator II bank file (*)
(*) = SoundDesigner for EmuII bank file (sized 475Kb)

Since Emulator II floppy disks can not be read/written by PC's and
(currently) no PC software can communicate with the Emulator II via
RS422, you'll still need a Mac with Sound Designer to upload/download
  bankfiles to/from the Emulator II.
So you will also have to exchange these SDII files between the Mac
and your Windows XP in order to process them with EMXP.
Fortunately this is quite easy. E.g. I use a trial version of MacDisk
and ZIP-disks and this works fine and fast.

The software can be found here (as always for free):
  http://users.skynet.be/emxp

If you've never used EMXP before, I should warn you that it is not "a
  typical Windows application".
The user-interface is menu-driven but with a plain old DOS look and
feel. Once you get used to it, it's actually quite simple and fast in
  use.
More information can be found in the manual which is included in the
  package.

If you don't want to read the whole manual, simply jump to page 17
for a quick start. Installing EMXP for use with Emulator II is easy:
copy the EMXPN.EXE file from the zip package to a dedicated folder on
your PC's harddrive and start the application :-)

More features, including conversion between Emulator II and
Emax/Akai/Emulator III will be added in the future.

I hope the software is useful for some of you.

  Have fun !

EMXP v2.03 Mac PC file transfers ResEdit & FileTyper

Bless you!!!! It was so killa to see this happen!

I was so excited about this that I bypassed the
MacDisk thing and dropped some *.EII image files on a
PC formatted ZIP and brought it over to the Mac.

I then edited manually the Type and Creator code info
with ResEdit and the SD bank loaded up fine.

Type = E2BK
Creator = XFER

This solution will work in other instances where there
may have been file translation problems with banks.

"FileTyper" for Macintosh is handy for doing this in
large batches.

To avoid running my zips into the ground, I would like
to experiment with just using FTP to get the files
across LAN and using FileTyper with an Applescript.
That might be the ultimate "modern" E2 setup. I still
use Alchemy, heh. [w]

Dear E-Synthesist,

Do you realize what you have done ?

All of a sudden the E2 belongs to the modern world again.

I join the people who do thank you a LOT for this, it is just the
missing link we needed.

Cheers

Thanks all for the positive feedback !
I'll try to add some more EII-features in the future.

One of the things that I'll also try out is using a direct serial
link between the PC and the Emulator II. I think I have the "code" to
instruct the Emulator II to upload and download bankfiles. So the
only additional thing I'll need is a small USB-to-RS422 convertor and
a custom-built serial cable. If it works we'll be able to skip the
Mac (although this could be a shame - the current setup is
really "vintage" and "charming").

By the way: reverse engineering the EII was fun, but it was also the
most difficult one since I started the EMXP project. The memory
layout applied by the EmuII is absolutely not straightforward (never
seen such a mess :-). The 8-bit compression algorithm on the other
hand is simply awesome - Emu did a fantastic thing here.

Fantastic. I'll do it like that in the future.
Because sometimes MacDisk had problems with writing Mac formatted ZIP
disks.
Good hint.

Fantastic software, thanks very much! I had a lot of fun today porting
EII factory presets to an ESI4000. The Marcato strings are really
harsh sounding, brilliant. Gonna try the Burmer and FMS libraries
tomorrow.
