awesome, i'm impressed SDII was even accurate. Alchemy always sounded better while doing DSP but i suppose that the SDII isn't doing any math so it should be transparent in this instance. i think there would be some dithering at the 12 and 16 bit file import export but its effect would be of little consequence and masked by the superiority of the DPX playback.
!!!
Digital is really only as good as the Analog playback...
otherwise ( in Digital land ) pretty much universal outside of complex maths.
all the bad mix issues that happen on digital
recordings are due to ill conceived decisions people make based upon wrong shit they are hearing. not whats digitally there but what gets added in the form of distortions and smearing by crappy clocking and inaccurate DA systems...
same recording will sound cloudy on an Apogee DA16 but crystal clear on a Lavry Blue or Gold ...
similar chips as in most DA/AD systems with better and worse circuit choices around them...
this is a great example.
thanks for doing the back end research!

Yes, the bottom four are still empty. :) I'm so impressed by the Mirage sample sound transformation that I had to verify. I ported an 8-bit Mirage sample via Sound Designer into the DPX-1 (converting 8-bit stored as 16-bit to 12-bit) and then ported that back into Sound Designer (12-bit to 16-bit). The original Mirage sample and the DPX-1 sample ported back into Sound Designer are the same exact waveform, there isn't any magic performed inside the DPX-1, it's still stored as 8-bit, in 12-bits of space. So now I know. It's just a much better playback engine. Still loving it! :)

MASOS, no MASOS, it doesn't seem to matter, it seems to happily load all Mirage samples, yah! The Mirage samples upconverted to 12-bit sound awesome, maybe somewhere in the SP-1200 ballpark, very nice, colorful, but not nasty, bordering on unusable, like in the Mirage. Love it!

Guess I'll start by opening it looking for loose connections... then explore where to get a replacement floppy drive, probably should have a newer one anyway. Shouldn't be too hard to find, I wouldn't think, a replacement floppy drive for my Emax I wasn't hard to find at all.

My DPX-1 has OS 2.2. It seems like the DPX-1 does not recognize any of my Mirage disks. I don't think I have ever created a Mirage sample outside of MASOS, and it's seems silly why I would ever want to. So I'm trying to figure out if there is something wrong with the floppy drive or if my MASOS samples simply will not load. Google isn't providing any answers. Any ideas?
