Well, it's a pretty easy test if you want to rule out the boot memory entirely.  You're right, if the memory came up as all good it's unlikely, but still it's an easy process to rule it out entirely.

I also had the same problem when my 5v rail was low and I adjusted a small trimpot on the power supply until it came back up to 5v.  My display was dimmer than usual also.
