Re: [emulatorII-list] EII + effects processors

2012-03-15 by James Ulibarri

I have the Roland RSS-10 impulse that I would love to load into Altiverb.   I had the actual hardware several times and always sold it because I could never locate the hardware controller for it.  And the original software was always a nightmare to use.   Roland actually had a pen and old school tablet that you could draw your own flight patterns for the doppler paths.  And it could lock to MTC.  Craziness.  That was the only convincing 3D processor I have ever liked.  There are some impossible spaces in that box that no other reverb can do they say.  I believe it.   I would also like to run the EII into a Carver Holography unit, although not as dramatic as the Roland RSS mainframes.   I do not own Alteriverb or any other IR reverb plugins so someone else will have to try it.

I should definitely try it with an echoplex tape echo ^^  for the guitar it’s unbeatable : modern digital, virtual, even analog delays can’t reach the ep3.

Then, about reverb you’re certainly right. I’d have to compare some low bits machines with altiverb which is a really great convolution IR reverb : the best reverb ever made : it’s supposed to sound like an emu II playing on some speakers, in an acoustic environment, and recorded, very very close to what it would sound like, recorded in the reality. I’d advise you to test it and tell us.

For years I have been a tad frustrated how the EII sounds through modern day effects processors.
As a result, I was using a DP4 and DP/4+ (they sound a little different) but still was off to my ears.   I would also sample the EII and use VST's.
Still not satsatisfied.  Something about the EII's engine just didn't sound right tonally to me through these
processors.   Recently I started picking up 12bit processors.   Wow, what a difference.  I think the EII
sounds so good with units as the original Alesis Midiverb (12bit tabletop unit) and Midifex.  And the Korg DVR1000.
Warning,  the old Alesis units reverb tales just crumble in 12bit crust.  It's crazy.  So does the echo unit.  But
the limited bandwith and bit depth really seems to sound more congruent with the EII's filters and sampling engine.  I guess it depends
what you're trying to achieve.  Older processors and the EII is instant lo-fi bliss. With the right presets and
the right tones from the EII, the air achieved from the 12bit reverb processors can sound so much more lush verses,
an EIII and say like a TC / Eventide / Lexicon.  I know that's a bold statement and a lot of variences in there, but this
has been my experience with these machines.   A space echo or spring reverb would sound very cool with the EII also I would think.
And would probably match up nicely with the way the EII sounds.
