Re: New member with question about Floppy-Emulator for EII

2011-08-13 by esynthesist

Hi

That floppy emulator will definitely not work, and it's quite expensive too :-)

The only floppy drive emulator which works with the Emulator-II is the HxC. Its firmware and the companion Windows software is specifically upgraded to support the Emulator-I and Emulator-II.

The HxC is available either as an SD Card device, or as a USB device which must be connected to a computer.
The best choice is the SD HxC, because it can be used stand-alone in the EII.

You can buy it here: http://www.lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=18
(there's an external "cased" version and a cheaper internal version that you can build into a case which would fit the E-II 5.25 drive bay)

Note however that you will also need the HxC host software on a Windows computer. This software is required to prepare/manage the SD cards used in the HxC. Just putting a FAT32 formatted SD card in the HxC of your E-II will not work; the SD card needs at least some "empty" E-II floppy images in order to be able to read/write data from/to it on the E-II. And these images can only be made and read by that HxC host software.
Unfortunately this software is only available on Windows, not Mac.

Which makes me think: ....maybe I will put such image files on my website. Because once you have at least one such a file, you *can* survive without a Windows computer :-)
In that case you are still able to copy files from/to the SD card on your Mac, but that's the only thing that you can do. It may be sufficient though, as a kind of backup/restore solution.
If your EII would still have a working floppy drive besides the SD HxC, you will also be able to copy floppy disks to the SD card and the other way around...

One last note: if your current E-II floppy drive(s) still work, and you have an old Mac (classic), than SoundDesigner for Emu-II and an RS422 cable is an option too !
