This most certainly points to a SCSI conflict and more specifically improper or failed termination. Double check your cables (including those inside your external SCSI CD enclosure), try another terminator, confirm with another external SCSI drive (Hard Disk, CD-Rom, Zip, Jaz, Syjet, etc). Best IDs to try blind are 4,5,6. To check SCSI IDs on the Mac end, unplug all external SCSI cables/devices, boot your Mac and install SCSI Probe 3.5 found in this groups Mac file section. SCSI Probe will show you what IDs are already in use by your Mac, so set your external devices to something else.
