That $5 Ebay one is the wrong size, PCB outline and viewing area: Original is 84 X 44 X 11 mm outline, 61 X 15.80 mm viewing area. I've just been told somewhere else also that the old LCD's were Hitachi HM44780 but replacing with a modern Powertip one of the same size was NOT straightforward but worked eventually with some knowledgeable tinkering and modding. Think this is a project too complex for me, short of maybe buying the $104 original SP1200 one, although still not sure if exactly same model as the EII for a straight swap. Seller cannot confirm....
