Well, Crystalfontz have replied quickly and are suggesting this: http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAH1602A-YYH-JT Outline dimensions match, viewing area very similar and with backlight. Same 5V voltage supply. $20 approx. ($50 ! with postage to UK). I need to confirm compatibility (?) as know little on electronics.
