inverter and maybe some resistor swaps to get the angle just right. I figure it will be your most utilized part used on the machine so a good display is a must.
A non-scratched and clean LCD section on the label helps too on the EII.
Also try www.backlight4you.com and Stefan could help you. They have colors too other than green. Glow Hut has colors also. I think the Telesis units just
use a gel which is hard to see when you have black/gray letters trying to come through.
Noritake's vacuum fluorescent LCD would be interesting too. I think you would be paving new ground here if you pull this off!
While I have never met Bruce Forat in person, he was extremely cordial and knowledgeable when I sent him my LinnDrum for repair. His services are not cheap, though (he's among the most expensive techs I've dealt with over the years), so you may want to keep that in mind if you end up purchasing anything from him.

Bruce Forat used to build drum machines in the 80's and is responsible for the F9000 and F16 and a ton of other stuff. He now mostly mods machines or repairs them and custom paint jobs. I helped him do sysex dumps on his Prophet 10 till 5 in the morning a few weeks ago and then had to drive home 2.5 hours. Not your average friday night!
Let us know how it goes. I want to replace one of my EII's display too. There is room for improvement there I think.
