This means that the "slow" communication at 31.25 kbaud is working, but the "fast" one at 500 kbaud is not. The fact that the drive is activated for a short while is just for loading the OS module for RS422 communication. It's typical behaviour for a Mac which doesn't support this 500 kbaud communication. In the database of hardware compatibility the Classic II is not mentioned as compatible, and if I remember well other people complained about this machine before.
